About Us:

Fieldguide is establishing a new state of trust for global commerce and capital markets through automating and streamlining the work of assurance and audit practitioners specifically within cybersecurity, privacy, and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance). Put simply, we build software for the people who enable trust between businesses.

We’re based in San Francisco, CA, but built as a remote-first company that enables you to do your best work from anywhere. We're backed by top investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, 8VC, Y Combinator, Floodgate, Elad Gil, Justin Kan, Qasar Younis, Eric Ries, and more.

We value diversity — in backgrounds and in experiences. We need people from all backgrounds and walks of life to help build the future of audit and advisory. Fieldguide’s team is inclusive, driven, humble and supportive. We are deliberate and self-reflective about the kind of team and culture that we are building, seeking teammates that are not only strong in their own aptitudes but care deeply about supporting each other's growth.

As an early stage start-up employee, you’ll have the opportunity to build out the future of business trust. We make audit practitioners’ lives easier by eliminating up to 50% of their work and giving them better work-life balance. If you share our values and enthusiasm for building a great culture and product, you will find a home at Fieldguide.

About the Role:

We are looking for a senior‑level back‑end engineer who loves building rock‑solid, scalable platforms and who thrives on enabling others to ship AI‑powered features quickly and safely. You will be the technical owner of our GenAI platform – the layer that powers ultra‑high‑throughput workflows such as ingesting hundreds of thousands of PDFs, extracting and vectorizing their content, and orchestrating agentic runtimes that call large‑language‑model APIs.

You will focus on the architecture, infrastructure, and developer experience that make AI features reliable, observable, and fast.

What You'll Do:

  • Design and implement service‑oriented architectures for AI workflows, including web servers, background workers, task queues, and event streams.

  • Harden and extend our Temporal‑based orchestration layer; own uptime, scaling, and observability for critical agentic workflows.

  • Build ingestion and retrieval pipelines that push the limits of pgvector, Pinecone, or similar vector stores.

  • Create tooling and CLIs that allow any engineer to stand up, debug, and deploy new LLM-powered workflows in minutes.

  • Optimize cost and performance across AWS, GCP, and other clouds as we expand our multi‑cloud strategy.

  • Collaborate closely with ML engineers, product managers, and infra/SRE teammates to ship lovable user experiences.

  • Champion engineering best practices around testing, monitoring, and secure handling of sensitive data.

About You:

  • Architecting distributed, server‑side systems in production, balancing speed with long‑term maintainability.

  • Programming in TypeScript/Node and/or Python, with strong fundamentals in relational databases such as Postgres.

  • Building and operating message/worker queues (e.g., AWS SQS, RabbitMQ, Kafka) at scale.

  • Deploying and monitoring workloads on AWS or GCP using IaC and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Writing maintainable, well‑tested code and leading projects involving multiple contributors.

Nice to Haves:

  • Temporal or other workflow orchestration engines.

  • pgvector, Pinecone, or other vector database technologies.

  • Integrating with OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar LLM APIs.

  • SRE or platform engineering background with a focus on reliability and observability.

  • Designing zero‑to‑one developer platforms or internal tooling for AI features.

Not sure if you meet 100 percent of the requirements? We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn’t match every bullet point. We’re looking for teammates who are eager to learn, grow with us, and bring new perspectives to the team.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
