The Senior Manager, Business Controls Owner serves as the operational governance authority for Hagerty's new insurance technology platform, ensuring that business processes are well-controlled, risks are identified and mitigated, and the platform operates in alignment with key risk and foundational business practices and key controls, regulatory, audit, and internal policy requirements. This individual contributor role sits at the intersection of insurance operations, technology, and enterprise risk, and serves as the primary business accountability point for controls design, documentation, testing, and ongoing monitoring across the platform lifecycle.




What you’ll do

Controls Design and Framework Ownership

Define, document, and own the end-to-end business controls [MB2.1] framework for the insurance platform, including process-level controls across policy administration, billing, underwriting, and claims workflows. Establish control objectives, control activities, and key risk indicators aligned to business outcomes.


Process Governance

Develop and maintain process documentation standards, including workflows, RACI assignments, and process narratives. Partner with operations and technology teams to ensure process controls are embedded at the point of design, not retrofitted after deployment.


Risk and Control Assessment

Lead risk and control self-assessments (RCSAs) [MB3.1] [JB3.2] for platform-impacted business processes. Identify control gaps, assess residual risk, and drive remediation plans to closure with clear ownership and timelines.


Audit and Regulatory Readiness

Serve as the primary business liaison for internal audit, external audit, and regulatory examinations related to platform operations. Ensure evidence packages are complete, narratives are clear, and control testing documentation meets audit standards.


Change Control and Platform Governance

Participate in the platform change management process, evaluating proposed changes for control impact and ensuring the controls inventory is updated to reflect evolving system capabilities and process flows.


Stakeholder Partnership

Collaborate closely with IT, compliance, finance, and insurance operations leadership to align on control priorities, escalate emerging risks, and ensure controls remain practical and proportionate to business needs.




This might describe you

  • Proven experience in business controls, operational risk, internal audit, or insurance operations governance. [JB4.1]
  • Direct experience in an insurance carrier, MGA, or program administrator environment strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with end -to- end insurance operations and core insurance core insurance technology platforms supporting but not limited to policy administration, underwriting, rating, billing, claims, reinsurance, financial reporting, and data management policy administration systems and insurance technology platforms (Duck Creek, Majesco, Guidewire, or equivalent).
  • Working knowledge of SOX, NAIC model audit rule, or state insurance regulatory requirements.
  • Experience leading RCSAs to support the business controls and preparing materials for internal or external audit examination coupled with familiarity with GRC Platforms to automate RCAs (Workiva, IT ServiceNow or equivalent GRC platforms).
  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, accounting, or a related field; CIA, CISA, or equivalent certification a plus.
  • Ability to connect control design decisions to business outcomes that includes policyholder service quality, claims cycle time, billing accuracy, and agent experience.
  • Ability to develop credibility with underwriting, claims, finance, and distribution leaders as a controls partner who improves how work gets done to support sustainable operations and not simply as a compliance or audit function. [JB5.1]
  • Ability to translate complex operational processes into clear, auditable control documentation.
  • Strong written communication skills; able to produce executive-ready materials independently.
  • Comfortable operating in a matrixed, cross-functional environment with ambiguous ownership.
  • Detail-oriented with strong project management instincts and the ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously.
  • Curiosity about technology and how platform capabilities can strengthen or introduce risk in business processes.



Other things to note
  • This position is open to U.S. remote work. However, team members who reside within 20 miles of the Traverse City headquarters will follow a hybrid schedule, working from the office three days per week.
  • Familiarity with public company requirements, including Sarbanes Oxley and key regulations, if applicable. For SOX compliant roles, responsible for designing, executing, and documenting internal controls where they have been identified as owners to prevent errors in financial reporting, processes, and business operations. Including attestation to the completeness, accuracy, and compliance of all financial reporting data, where applicable.
