Cook Inlet Region, Inc is seeking a talented Senior Manager, Accounting to join our accounting team. CIRI's offices are conveniently located in mid-town Anchorage at the Fireweed Business Center, a modern building that represents CIRI’s cultural diversity, respect for the land, and sustainability. The Fireweed Business Center reflects our heritage in the displayed Alaska Native art and interior design.


Cook Inlet Region, Inc., also known as CIRI, is one of 12 land-based Alaska Native regional corporations created pursuant to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA). CIRI’s regional boundaries roughly follow the traditional Dena’ina territory of Southcentral Alaska. CIRI was incorporated on June 8, 1972, and is owned today by a diverse group of more than 9,500 Shareholders who live in Alaska and throughout the world.

 

This position is based in Anchorage, AK but offers a fully remote schedule for candidates who live outside of Alaska. Remote employees may be required to travel to the corporate office on a regular schedule.

General Function

In alignment with CIRI’s mission and values, the Senior Manager, Accounting is responsible for ensuring accurate internal and external financial reporting from subsidiaries and investments in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) across multiple industry segments. This role will manage accounting activities, implement accounting policies, procedures and controls in a shared service environment with a focus on customer service and meeting operational needs of CIRI’s industry segments.

 

Major Activities (Typical Duties/Responsibilities)

  1. Manage the monthly financial close process, including ensuring all costs incurred are property recorded, review journal entries, account balance reconciliation and report preparation.
  2. Oversee the integration of accounting activities of the various divisions and subsidiaries into CIRI’s accounting systems, ensure accurate financial reporting and adherence with GAAP, FAR, and CAS.
  3. Manage complex monthly consolidating financial statements across multiple industries for CIRI, CST and their subsidiaries.
  4. Act as the subject-matter-expert responsible for managing and maintaining the general ledger system and all related financial reporting and budgeting tools and software
  5. Participate in the ongoing development and establishment of accounting policies and procedures and operational strategies with a focus on efficient , effective, and continuous improvement.
  6. Oversee the onboarding of newly acquired entities into the financial reporting and control structure.
  7. Provide implementation and post implementation leadership for accounting software, ensuring CIRI financial reporting requirements are met. Provide best practices support to all users of the tool organization wide.
  8. Lead the annual budget compilation, work closely with all divisions and subsidiaries including written analysis.
  9. Lead the annual financial audit process of CIRI, CST and their subsidiaries. Review schedules and work papers, compile data for audited financial statements, footnotes and management discussion and analysis.
  10. Provide financial analysis and research support to operating and administrative departments.
  11. Assist in research, analysis and reporting changes in GAAP, FAR, and CAS to the accounting management team.
  12. Oversee the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) Section 7(i) report accounting requirements to ensure appropriate accounting, reporting and audit issuance.
  13. Guide the professional development of the department’s staff.
  14. Complete special projects and other duties as assigned and appropriate.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Understand CIRI’s mission, vision and strategic focus areas and incorporate knowledge into daily activities.
  • Thorough knowledge of, and ability to apply, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and reporting standards, Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR), and Cost Accounting Standards (CAS).
  • Thorough knowledge of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act Section 7(i)
  • Knowledge of general accounting operations, including general ledger management, account reconciliations, financial reporting, internal controls, regulatory compliance and accounting process administration.
  • Strong sense of organization.
  • Ability to develop comprehensive work plans for short, mid-range and long-term projects such as financial analysis for operating departments and accounting and internal control considerations. Ability to manage such projects and to perform many of the related project tasks.
  • Ability to prepare complex consolidated financial statements.
  • Ability to prepare and analyze operating, capital and cash flow proformas and budgets.
  • Financial and audit skills commensurate with a corporation the size and functional orientation of CIRI.
  • Thorough understanding of an enterprise resource planning system and corresponding general ledger applicability (CostPoint, Workday, and Adaptive products preferred)
  • Strong organizational, follow-up, and detail-oriented skills, with the ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to make decisions, solve problems and exercise good judgment
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritize workload.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and develop staff through work planning, performance management, coaching, corrective action and development.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff, affiliated-company employees as well as outside business associates; exhibits a professional manner in dealing with others.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with a particular emphasis on the presentation of financial materials.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while exercising sound judgment, initiative, problem-solving skills, and decision-making authority appropriate to the position.
  • Ability to adapt to changing business needs, lead through process changes, manage multiple priorities, and consistently meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and quality.
  • Excellent leadership, supervisory and management skills.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office products, such as Word, Excel and Outlook, and industry-standard computer software, financial reporting systems, and databases.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality when handling sensitive financial, employee, and company information.

Physical Abilities

  • Sufficient fine motor skills for use of computers, calculators with an ability to withstand repetitive keyboarding for extended periods of time
  • Visual and communication abilities adequate to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to kneel, bend and twist at the waist on an occasional basis
  • Ability to reach below shoulder height with regular frequency (desk position) and at or above shoulder height on occasion
  • Ability to push, pull, carry and lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds on an occasional basis

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance or business-related field
  • Six years of accounting experience
  • Public accounting experience preferred
  • Government contractor accounting experience preferred
  • Two years’ supervisory experience
  • CPA license holder/candidate preferred
  • Ability to pass a background screening
