This is a remote position.

We are seeking a Senior Integration & Systems Engineer to design, implement, and maintain reliable system integrations and technical infrastructure that support critical business operations. This role is well suited for someone who works independently, applies sound technical judgment, and produces structured, high-quality work in environments where accuracy and system reliability matter.

imaServe is a behavioral-health EHR and billing platform used by provider organizations to manage clinical care, scheduling, and revenue cycle operations.

Our systems run in customer-managed environments, both on premises and in Azure, across multiple generations of Red Hat–based Linux. You’ll work within each customer’s VPN, security, maintenance-window, and change-control requirements.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Build and maintain scripts, services, and scheduled interfaces that exchange data with hospitals, HIEs, payers, and partners.

  • Monitor interfaces and resolve failed, delayed, or rejected transactions through confirmed delivery.

  • Launch new integrations from specification and testing through cutover and documentation.

  • Administer source control and manage builds, releases, backups, and tested rollback procedures.

  • Lead our transition to Git, automated builds, and CI/CD.

  • Configure, secure, patch, monitor, and troubleshoot customer-hosted Linux systems.

  • Maintain storage, capacity, backups, disaster recovery, certificates, credentials, and system performance.

  • Support varied Linux versions and lead migrations away from end-of-life operating systems.

  • Coordinate directly with customer IT and security teams during maintenance, implementations, incidents, and go-lives.

  • Participate in an on-call rotation and scheduled after-hours maintenance.

  • Create clear inventories, runbooks, and technical documentation.

  • Use Claude Code daily for scripting, code review, legacy-code analysis, and documentation—while carefully validating all output.

During your first few months, you’ll document our interfaces and customer environments, establish a repeatable release process, verify backups, improve monitoring, and assess systems requiring modernization.

Our stack includes an AlphaBASIC application transpiled to C, Red Hat–family Linux, a FairCom c-tree ISAM database, and a Windows client. Experience with these specific technologies is not required. Curiosity, patience, and sound judgment when working with unfamiliar legacy systems are essential.

This role offers significant autonomy, direct customer relationships, and the opportunity to modernize systems that support real clinical and billing operations. All work is performed under HIPAA obligations and requires careful handling of Protected Health Information.

RequirementsMinimum Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in Linux systems administration, DevOps, or systems/integration engineering within a production environment where system availability is critical.

  • Strong systems thinking and sound judgment, with the ability to work independently through complex technical problems with depth, precision, and accountability.

  • Clear written communication skills for documentation, specifications, technical handoffs, and correspondence with trading partners and customer IT teams.

  • Ability to manage competing technical priorities in environments with changing requirements.

  • Strong Bash/POSIX shell scripting skills, including writing reliable scripts with effective error handling, logging, and idempotent behavior.

  • In-depth experience with Red Hat–family Linux across multiple versions, including RHEL, CentOS, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, or Oracle Linux. Knowledge should include storage, permissions, systemd and SysV services, yum/dnf, cron, networking, firewalls, SELinux, SSH, package management, logging, and performance troubleshooting.

  • Experience administering customer-owned on-premises servers or cloud environments through customer-managed access tools such as AnyConnect, GlobalProtect, FortiClient, OpenVPN, WireGuard, Azure VPN, or Bastion, including MFA and jump hosts.

  • Experience working within customer change-control processes, including approvals, maintenance windows, and coordination with IT and security teams.

  • Experience operating unattended data interfaces using SFTP/FTPS, HTTPS/REST, curl or equivalent tools, certificates, and credentials, with a focus on verifying successful delivery.

  • Experience administering version-control repositories, along with strong Git proficiency.

  • Build and release management experience, including compiling and linking C applications on Linux, working with makefiles, and managing controlled production deployments.

  • Working knowledge of TLS/PKI and secure secrets management.

  • Ability to work carefully within a large, long-lived legacy codebase with limited documentation—and to improve that documentation over time.

  • Willingness to use Claude Code or similar AI-assisted development tools daily for writing and reviewing code. Candidates must be able to critically evaluate AI-generated work and take responsibility for everything they ship.

  • Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation and perform scheduled maintenance outside normal business hours.

  • Ability to work under HIPAA requirements and pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Healthcare interface experience with HL7 v2—including ADT, ORU, or SIU—C-CDA/CCD, IHE XDS.b, X12 EDI 837/835, Direct secure messaging, or HIE integrations.

  • Production experience with an EHR, practice-management, or revenue-cycle system.

  • Experience with ISAM or other non-relational, record-oriented databases, particularly FairCom c-tree, Btrieve, or similar technologies.

  • Exposure to legacy business languages such as AlphaBASIC, Business BASIC, COBOL, or MUMPS, or to source-to-C transpilation toolchains.

  • Microsoft Azure IaaS experience, including virtual machines, disks, snapshots, network security groups, VPN Gateway, Bastion, and backups—particularly within customer-owned subscriptions. Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms is also welcome.

  • Experience with end-of-life operating-system migrations, including CentOS 7 migrations to RHEL, Rocky Linux, or AlmaLinux; in-place major-version upgrades; or rebuild-and-migrate projects for legacy application servers.

  • Experience migrating from CVS to Git and developing CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or similar tools.

  • Experience applying configuration management or infrastructure-as-code tools such as Ansible, Puppet, or Terraform across varied environments. Container experience is also valuable.

  • Experience supporting infrastructure for multiple customers at a software company or managed service provider.

  • Experience with monitoring and alerting platforms such as Nagios, Icinga, Zabbix, Prometheus, or ELK.

  • Python or Perl experience for operational tooling and log analysis.

  • Hands-on Claude Code experience, including custom commands, subagents, hooks, MCP servers, or maintaining CLAUDE.md-style repository context.

  • Familiarity with HIPAA Security Rule technical safeguards, SOC 2, or HITRUST.

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
