Job Summary & Responsibilities

Overview:

As a Senior Instructional Designer, you’ll lead the design of impactful learning experiences that support real business outcomes. You’ll partner with subject matter experts and stakeholders to turn complex or evolving problems into clear, effective learning solutions aligned to organizational goals. In this role, you’ll take ownership of high-complexity initiatives, champion instructional quality and consistency, mentor other designers, and help shape the direction of our learning strategy.

Role Scope & Expectations:

This role is designed for senior-level instructional designers who are comfortable operating in ambiguity, influencing stakeholders, and balancing hands-on design work with strategic ownership.

While this position includes individual content development, it is not solely a production-focused role. Senior Instructional Designers are expected to lead complex initiatives, shape design standards, mentor other designers, and partner closely with operations and leadership to ensure learning solutions align with business priorities.

    • Expertise in instructional design principles, adult learning theory, and e-learning best practices.
    • Expertise in instructional design software (e.g., Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline, Camtasia) and learning management system (LMS).
  • Skills
    • Ability to balance creativity with consistency and process, ensuring solutions align with business objectives and instructional principles.
    • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage complex projects from inception to completion.
    • Proficiency in Google Workplace, Microsoft and project management programs.
    • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

Attributes:

  • Creative Problem-Solving: Ability to design innovative solutions to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead instructional design projects and mentor junior team members.
  • Analytical Thinking: Strong analytical skills to assess learning effectiveness and make data-driven decisions.
  • Collaboration: Team player who thrives in a collaborative environment and can work effectively with stakeholders at all levels.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
