The Senior Network and Infrastructure Engineer plays a critical role in designing, deploying, and maintaining the core infrastructure that supports D2L’s global operations. This role blends deep technical expertise in enterprise networking and cloud infrastructure, with a focus on ensuring high availability, performance, scalability, and security across both on-premises and cloud environments, including platforms such as AWS and Azure.

The engineer will be responsible for managing the full lifecycle of physical network components (Aruba switches, firewalls, access points) and virtual network configurations in Azure. They will lead projects, optimize infrastructure performance, implement automation, and ensure all systems are documented and compliant with security standards. The ideal candidate is a strong collaborator, capable of mentoring peers, driving technical decisions, and owning network architecture end to end.

Major Responsibilities:

Operations and Maintenance
•    Enterprise Network Architecture & Maintenance
Design, deploy, and support LAN/WAN, wireless, and VPNs across physical and cloud environments. Maintain accurate documentation of network designs, IP schemes, and architecture decisions.
•    Cloud Networking (Azure Focused)
Build and maintain Azure virtual networks, NSGs, route tables, and hybrid connectivity (e.g., ExpressRoute, Site-to-Site VPN). Document cloud configurations, routing paths, and integration points with on-premises networks.
•    Network Security & Access Control
Configure and maintain firewalls, NAC solutions (e.g., ClearPass), and remote access policies. Create and update security policy documentation, access control lists, and audit logs.
•    Hardware Lifecycle Management
Perform hardware upgrades, replacements, and lifecycle tracking for switches, firewalls, and access points. Maintain inventory records, lifecycle schedules, and deployment documentation.

Monitoring and Automation
•    Network Monitoring
Monitor network health using Aruba Central, SNMP, and NetFlow. Document monitoring thresholds, alert response playbooks, and historical performance data.
•    Automation of Network Tasks
Automate repetitive tasks using scripting or orchestration tools (e.g., PowerShell, Ansible, Python). Maintain script repositories with usage documentation, change logs, and automation workflow diagrams.
•    Availability and Fault Management
Ensure uptime by implementing automated failover mechanisms and redundancy strategies. Document high availability configurations, redundancy paths, and incident response procedures.

Optimization and Performance Tuning
•    Traffic Analysis and Bandwidth Optimization
Analyze traffic patterns, optimize routing, and apply QoS policies. Document tuning outcomes, performance benchmarks, and historical trend data.
•    Capacity Planning
Project future network demands and scale infrastructure to support growth. Maintain capacity reports, utilization forecasts, and growth models.
•    Configuration Standardization
Enforce consistent and secure configurations across all network devices using templates and automation. Maintain version-controlled configuration standards and update logs.

Collaboration and Support
•    Escalation and Subject Matter Expertise
Act as the technical authority and escalation point for complex network issues. Document troubleshooting processes, RCA reports, and known issue resolutions.
•    Project Participation
Provide technical input for infrastructure projects, ensuring proper network design, integration, and scalability. Maintain project-specific documentation and implementation plans.
•    Cross-Team Troubleshooting
Partner with infrastructure, application, and support teams to diagnose and resolve network-related problems. Log and document resolutions in accordance with team procedures.
•    Documentation and Knowledge Sharing
Own and maintain all network-related documentation including topology diagrams, SOPs, runbooks, and knowledge base articles. Provide documentation-based training and guidance for peers and junior engineers. Participate in formal yearly documentation reviews and ensure outdated documents are revised, archived, or removed in accordance with governance policies.
•    Change Management Participation
Prepare and document change records, risk assessments, and rollback plans for all network modifications. Follow ITIL-aligned change control processes and maintain detailed records.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO THE ROLE:

Competencies:
•    Strong technical troubleshooting and diagnostic skills across complex networked environments.
•    Effective communicator and collaborator across infrastructure, security, and project teams.
•    Strong understanding of security best practices in networking and cloud environments.
•    Excellent documentation, knowledge-sharing, and mentoring abilities.
•    Strategic mindset with the ability to align infrastructure with business goals and growth.

Suggested Qualifications/Experience:
•  Networking Expertise:
5+ years of experience with physical and virtual networking, including enterprise technologies such as switching, routing, VLANs, QoS, VPNs, and advanced network security and design.
•  Cloud Infrastructure (Azure):
2+ years of hands-on experience with Azure Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), including virtual networking (VNETs, NSGs, routing, peering, and hybrid connectivity).
•  Aruba Network Technologies:
Proven experience with Aruba infrastructure including Aruba Central and ClearPass for network management and access control.
•  Infrastructure Operations & Microsoft Ecosystem:
Experience with Windows Server and Windows desktop operating systems, Office 365, Active Directory, SCCM, MDM solutions, and infrastructure patching and maintenance.
•  Monitoring and Resiliency:
Strong background in infrastructure monitoring, as well as implementing database backups, high availability (Always-On), and disaster recovery strategies.
•  Automation and Infrastructure as Code:
Proficient in scripting and automation tools such as PowerShell, Python, and Ansible; familiar with configuration management and version control practices.
•  Certifications (Preferred):
Aruba Certified, Azure Administrator/Architect, CCNA/CCNP, Network+, Security+.
