The Role
We're seeking a Sr Engineering Manager who can balance the art of people leadership with technical excellence. You'll lead a team of talented engineers, fostering their growth while driving the delivery of high-quality software that impacts thousands of outdoor enthusiasts and property owners across North America.
In this role, you'll be both a technical leader and a people champion, someone who can motivate and drive software development efficiencies, architect scalable solutions, remove blockers for your team, and coach developers through career challenges.
What You'll Do
Build and Lead High-Performing Teams
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of software engineers through regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development planning
 - Foster a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence
 - Recruit and retain top engineering talent and create exceptional onboarding experiences
 - Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion within your team and across the organization
 
Drive Technical Strategy and Execution
- Define technical roadmaps in partnership with product leadership and senior engineering stakeholders
 - Make architectural decisions that balance immediate needs with long-term scalability
 - Champion engineering best practices including code reviews, testing strategies, and documentation
 - Identify and eliminate technical debt while maintaining feature velocity
 
Enable Team Success
- Proactively identify and remove obstacles that slow your team down
 - Facilitate effective collaboration between engineering, product, design, and business stakeholders
 - Break down complex projects into manageable milestones and coordinate cross-team efforts
 - Create clarity around priorities and empower your team to make autonomous decisions
 
Deliver Impact
- Own the delivery of your team's roadmap, balancing quality, speed, and scope
 - Drive continuous improvement in team processes, tooling, and workflows
 - Establish meaningful metrics to measure team health and delivery effectiveness
 - Communicate progress, risks, and wins to stakeholders at all levels
 
Our Tech Stack
We build on modern, cloud-native technologies:
- Backend: Java and Kotlin with the Dropwizard framework
 - Frontend: TypeScript and Angular
 - Infrastructure: AWS (EKS, RDS, Lambda, S3, and more)
 - DevOps: Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, containerization
 - Practices: Test-driven development, pair programming, continuous deployment
 
What We're Looking For
Experience:
- 7+ years of software engineering experience with at least 4 years in engineering management
 - Deep technical expertise in full-stack web development
 - Proven track record of delivering complex software projects from concept to production
 - Experience scaling teams and systems in a growth-stage environment
 
Technical Skills:
- Strong proficiency in at least one of: Java, Kotlin, or TypeScript
 - Experience designing and building cloud-native applications on AWS or similar platforms
 - Understanding of modern software architecture patterns (microservices, event-driven, etc.)
 - Familiarity with CI/CD practices and infrastructure as code
 
Leadership Skills:
- Exceptional communication skills. You can explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
 - Proven ability to coach and develop engineers at various career stages
 - Experience managing team dynamics, resolving conflicts, and building consensus
 - Track record of creating inclusive, high-trust team environments

Compensation and Benefits
- Total compensation for this role is anticipated to be in the following range: $170,000-$200,000

While Campspot is a remote-first company, we are initially limiting our search to candidates in our hiring hubs of Grand Rapids (MI), Denver (CO), and Chicago (IL) who are interested in the potential for in-person collaboration.
