Imagine what we’ll build together.

About the Data Engineering Team

Thumbtack’s Data Engineering team is a functional organization within Engineering that works closely with engineers, data scientists, and machine learning engineers to help design data sets to meet current and future needs. Today the Data organization within Thumbtack Engineering is composed of a Data Platform team focused on building core systems and infrastructure for working with data at scale, and a centralized Data Engineering team that owns core data sets and pipelines, as well as data tools that enable developer productivity and data conformance. However, this single, centralized Data Engineering team has struggled to meet the demands of many varied business domains, due to differing maturity levels in data management at Thumbtack’s scale.

The Challenge

In order to address this, Thumbtack is expanding our Data Engineering strategy to ensure that the next generation of home care is built on a rock-solid foundation by differentiating some of the work into central and decentralized Data teams. Our vision is to accelerate the flow of data inside the platform, ensuring that teams are thinking about data as a product while they build, without slowing them down.

We’re expanding the organization to create a new embedded Data Engineering team, made up of one existing squad working with Marketing teams, plus two new sub-teams intended to support marketplace dynamics and supply acquisition. You’ll help us grow and direct our marketing data strategy, while working closely with engineering and data science leaders to set the direction for the new sub-teams. This role offers an exciting mix of enhancing existing successes with exploring and iterating in new domains.

You’ll never be alone, however. The Data organization is already a highly-collaborative team, and you’ll work closely with a Product Manager focused on data, a Technical Program Manager supporting cross-functional projects, your peer manager in Core Data Engineering, and tech leads across the team. You’ll support each other to build a stronger and more innovative Data organization at Thumbtack.

What you'll do
  • Define and drive the technical vision & strategies for your team across several domains.
  • Strategically partner with cross functional counterparts (product engineering, applied science, data science) on strategy, prioritization, and execution.
  • Drive team execution against team-specific OKRs.
  • Lead and manage the team as a highly-competent technical leader (not just a people leader), who can help guide complex technical decisions.
  • Hire, coach, and manage data engineers at all levels.
  • Build and evolve a high performing culture of excellence on the team.
  • Work closely with other engineering leaders to evolve and continually improve Thumbtack’s engineering culture in a high paced growth environment.
In order to be successful, you must bring
  • 3+ years of experience in an engineering management role.
  • 5+ years of experience building software at scale.
  • Strong technical skills and is willing to be hands-on with code reviews, debugging, and data and/or systems design.
  • Strong leadership, collaboration and communication skills.
  • Experience shaping technical & product strategy in collaboration with cross functional counterparts (design, product, data science).
  • Commitment to building inclusive teams and team culture.
Expected salary ranges
  • For candidates living in San Francisco / Bay Area, San Jose, New York City, or Seattle metros, the expected salary range for the role is currently $257,600 - $333,300.
  • For candidates living in Austin, TX or Washington DC metros or in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, or Washington states, the expected salary range for the role is currently $231,800 - $300,000.
  • For candidates living in all other US locations, the expected salary range for this role is currently $219,000 - $283,400.

Actual offered salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as calibrated job level, qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
