Ensuring Financial Security for All Workers

Transforming Access to Retirement Benefits for Small and Medium Businesses

Human Interest is seeking a Senior Employment Counsel to join its Legal team. This senior role is central to supporting a mission-driven, high-growth fintech company dedicated to making retirement savings accessible and affordable for employees across the United States.

The Senior Employment Counsel will serve as the primary legal advisor to the People team, providing expert guidance across the full employment lifecycle—including hiring, performance management, terminations, accommodations, and compliance for a multistate workforce. This role owns all employment disputes, managing pre-litigation claims, administrative charges, and litigation strategy, while overseeing internal investigations and advising on employment law compliance, particularly for non-exempt employee populations.

Beyond core employment matters, the Senior Employment Counsel will engage with adjacent legal areas as business needs evolve, including privacy, ERISA, non-employment litigation, regulatory inquiries, and commercial contracting. The position requires a proactive, adaptable attorney who is comfortable learning new areas of law and taking ownership of unfamiliar issues.

The ideal candidate brings 8–10+ years of dedicated employment law experience, including in-house counsel roles and a strong background in California employment law. Experience managing employment litigation, advising on equity and executive compensation, and working with high-growth or technology companies is highly valued. The role demands exceptional communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced environment.

Human Interest’s Legal team is committed to leveraging AI as a core part of legal practice. The successful candidate will demonstrate fluency with AI tools, integrating them into daily workflows to enhance research, drafting, and analysis, and will help foster AI adoption across the team.

This is an opportunity to play a pivotal role in closing the retirement gap for millions of Americans, working alongside a collaborative, mission-driven team that values customer focus, long-term thinking, autonomy, and continuous improvement.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
