Company overview:

Flagship Labs 109, Inc. (FL109) is a privately held, early-stage technology company pioneering the use of artificial intelligence, physics and hardware to transform the way we see biology. FL109 was conceived by Flagship Pioneering, which brings the courage, long-term vision, and resources needed to realize unreasonable results. Become part of our mission-driven team and help envision the future of science.

The Role:

FL109 is seeking a dynamic leader to build and deploy state-of-the-art AI solutions to transform how we see molecular biology. You are passionate about shipping high-impact products and are eager to build a team from the ground up. You will implement best practices that enable scalability while also spearheading proof-of-concept demonstrations to showcase the platform’s potential. Your role is pivotal in integrating AI innovation with experimental workflows in a fast-paced startup environment.

How You Will Contribute:

  • Team Leadership: Develop a clear vision for the AI/computation team, mentor members, and establish processes that balance innovation with operational excellence. Ensure strategic alignment between team objectives and the company’s broader goals.
  • Hands-On Development: Lead by example, actively coding alongside the team to build end-to-end solutions that address real-world challenges. Design, implement, and deploy systems that deliver immediate value.
  • Value-Driven Innovation: Rapidly prototype creative solutions to solve important challenges, and transition successful prototypes into production systems. Guide the analysis and visualization of complex datasets and learnings that guides leadership decisions.
  • Shipping Solutions: Focus on delivering production-grade AI pipelines and software that integrate seamlessly into experimental and computational workflows. Prioritize solutions that are both scalable and impactful.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with experimentalists, physicists, and other domain experts to co-develop hybrid solutions that advance structural biology. Bridge computational and wet lab teams to ensure the most potent use of AI.
  • Team Building: Attract and hire top talent in AI, software, and computational biology. Foster a culture of collaboration, ownership, and a focus on delivering results.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Proven experience shipping production-grade AI/ML systems in a startup or resource-constrained environment.
  • Hands-on expertise in building and deploying end-to-end pipelines for real-world applications (i.e., Python, bash, PyTorch, git/GitHub, Linux).
  • Strong technical foundation in machine learning (e.g., generative models, physics-informed AI, LLMs) and computational techniques.
  • A track record of building and leading teams, with the ability to balance mentorship and hands-on development.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based computing platforms (e.g., AWS) and high-performance computing tools for large-scale model training and deployment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with a resourceful mindset that thrives in a dynamic startup environment.
  • Passion for working at the intersection of AI and experimental biology, with a deep appreciation for how computational tools can advance scientific discovery.
