WHO WE ARE

Level99 is a real-world gaming venue designed for adults, featuring over 50 mental and physical challenges in artistic environments. Games range from ninja warrior obstacle course style challenges to mental logic puzzles, and everything in between. Each challenge is quick—just 1 to 4 minutes—and Players can do the same room over and over again, or they can move on to something new. Like a video game, Players earn rewards, climb the leaderboard, and make progress – each time a Player comes back, the game remembers where they left off.

Alongside the games, Level99 offers a full-service bar and award-winning restaurant – featuring scratch-cooking, local craft beers, handmade cocktails, and a variety of event spaces. Level99 has locations in Natick, MA, Providence, RI, and is opening in Tysons, VA, West Hartford, CT, and Disney Springs, FL. Level99 is backed by Act III Holdings, led by Panera founder Ron Shaich, and we have a talented team that has worked on successful entertainment projects ranging from 5 Wits to Walt Disney Imagineering. OVERVIEW

Level99 is looking for a Senior Data Engineer to lead the development and ownership of our Data Analytics capability as we scale from startup to enterprise. You’ll design and maintain core data pipelines, ensure system performance and reliability, and collaborate across teams to deliver trusted, accessible data. This role requires strong engineering skills, architectural judgment, and the ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to senior stakeholders.

Each Level99 Engineer is passionate about getting the details right, anticipating staff and guest needs, and advancing the Level99 brand.  A Level99 Engineer has honesty and personal integrity that is above reproach, prefers a joyful and positive approach to challenging situations, chooses humility over the need to “be right,” and in all things acts as though they are the Owner and Operator of each Level99 venue.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build and Optimize Data Infrastructure
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines, ETL/ELT processes, and warehouse structures that support reporting and analytics.
  • Implement secure, performant data solutions using technologies like Snowflake, PostgreSQL, Node.js, and AWS.
  • Write production-ready SQL and stored procedures, including advanced operations (joins, merges, triggers) across large datasets.
  • Continuously improve data architecture for scalability, maintainability, and cost-efficiency as data volume and complexity grow.
  • Own and maintain DevOps workflows for data systems, including CI/CD, infrastructure automation, and environment management using orchestration and automation tools (e.g., Bitbucket Pipelines, Sqitch, Terraform).
  • Collaborate Across Teams
  • Work closely with strategy, finance, product, analytics, and engineering teams to define data requirements and deliver reliable, well-structured datasets.
  • Ensure data quality, consistency, and integrity from source systems to reporting and analytics environments.
  • Serve as a technical resource in cross-functional initiatives, helping design and maintain data flows that support business and technical needs.
  • Align data architecture and pipelines with organizational goals to enable scalable and accessible data solutions.
  • Communicate with Clarity
  • Translate technical concepts and trade-offs into clear language for senior leadership, including progress updates, technical risks, and architectural recommendations.
  • Partner with analysts to design and implement executive dashboards and reporting tools that drive strategic decision-making.
  • Document systems, pipelines, and processes to ensure alignment and knowledge-sharing across the organization.
  • Drive Engineering Best Practices
  • Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and root cause analysis sessions.
  • Contribute to and help maintain a strong engineering culture focused on code quality, automation, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure data systems are reliable and resilient by implementing monitoring and alerting for full observability, enabling proactive issue detection and smooth operation.

MUST-HAVE SKILLS

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 7+ years of post-collegiate hands-on experience in data or software engineering, preferably in fast-paced, high-growth environments.
  • Deep proficiency in SQL, data modeling, and ETL/ELT design using tools like Snowflake, PostgreSQL, and MySQL.
  • Strong backend development experience with Node.js, and comfort working across data APIs and services.
  • Experience with AWS (especially data-related services) and infrastructure as code (Terraform or similar).
  • Familiarity with modern development practices—CI/CD, version control (Git), testing, monitoring, and incident response.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on business needs which may include days, nights, and weekends as well as emergency responsiveness to pressing technical issues as required.
  • Ability to read and comprehend software and hardware documentation.
  • A thoughtful, clear communicator who can tailor technical discussions for both engineering teams and executive stakeholders.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity, shifting priorities, and scaling systems to meet growing organizational needs.

OTHER DESIRABLE (BUT NOT NECESSARY) SKILLS & EXPERIENCE INCLUDE

  • Extensive knowledge in the following areas: SQL, Snowflake, AWS, Sqitch
  • Knowledge of software best practices and standards

While we don’t expect a candidate to have deep experience in all of the above, we’re looking for someone with the passion and capability to learn quickly in the areas that are new!

YOU MIGHT BE A FIT ON THE LEVEL99 TEAM IF YOU…

  • Like to laugh, would be described as a "low maintenance, low drama" person, have a tendency to have a bit of fun while you work
  • Have a high tolerance for ambiguity, like to go fast, and are excited to learn on the job
  • Are just a little bit obsessive about getting the details right the first time
  • Have a high energy personality, the kind of person who is typically smiling, and likes to "get it done now"

Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
