About this role:
Pickle Robot Company is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Data Engineer to join our growing engineering team. In this critical role, you will be instrumental in designing, building, and maintaining our data infrastructure, enabling the collection, processing, and analysis of vast amounts of data generated by our robotic systems and operational processes. You will work closely with robotics engineers, machine learning scientists, and product managers to ensure that data is reliable, accessible, and actionable, driving insights that optimize robot performance and business operations.

What You’ll Accomplish:

  • Lead cross-functional collaboration to understand data needs and deliver high-impact solutions.
  • Define robot performance metrics and establish standardized calculation methodologies.
  • Design and maintain a scalable data ingestion pipeline for robotic systems, emphasizing robustness, reliability, and low latency.
  • Design database schemas to support efficient querying and establish data pipelines that transform raw operational data into structured, analysis-ready formats.
  • Monitor and optimize database performance to ensure scalable data operations and maintain system reliability.
  • Lead the transition from the current visualization tool to a new platform, owning its implementation, configuration, and ongoing support.
  • Develop both internal operational and customer-facing dashboards that provide real-time and historical insights into robot performance.
  • Partner with engineering to create subsystem-level monitoring dashboards that provide targeted insights for specific components and processes.
  • Leverage robot telemetry data to develop predictive analytics capabilities for proactive issue identification and root cause analysis.
  • Support and contribute to machine learning initiatives by providing clean, well-structured datasets and implementing data infrastructure that enables advanced analytics and model development.

Who You Are:

  • Proven experience in architecting and implementing data ingestion pipelines.
  • Proficiency with modern data visualization platforms such as Grafana, Tableau, Power BI, or similar.
  • Experience setting up, customizing, and maintaining these tools in a production environment.
  • Strong skills in database administration, including schema design, optimization, backups, and access control.
  • Experience implementing data monitoring, logging, and alerting systems to ensure the reliability and accuracy of data pipelines and dashboards.
  • Experience with Google Cloud and using BigQuery including defining resources using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
  • Proficiency in Python, Bash, or similar languages for scripting and automating data-related tasks.
  • Ability to provide strategic vision for how data can support product development, diagnostics, and operations.
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally with engineering, operations, and leadership teams to translate business needs into data solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation, stakeholder presentations, and team collaboration.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, or related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, with at least 2 years in a senior or lead capacity.
  • Experience with robotics, IoT, or real-time systems strongly preferred.
  • Willing to work from our Charlestown, MA office at least 3 days a week.
