Apollo is looking for a skilled litigator to own our litigation and disputes function — a high-judgment, high-visibility role at the center of our legal risk strategy. This person will manage Apollo's active litigation portfolio, build the infrastructure and processes that keep the company ahead of legal exposure, and serve as the primary in-house voice on disputes strategy reporting to the Senior Director, Risk & Regulatory. The right person is a seasoned litigator — comfortable owning matters end-to-end, managing outside counsel with a sharp eye on cost and strategy, and translating complex legal risk into business-ready guidance. This is not a narrow or reactive role: you will manage an active matter in the morning and brief a product team on emerging exposure in the afternoon. This role is remote; periodic in-person offsites are part of our culture.
Key Responsibilities:
- Owning Apollo's litigation portfolio end-to-end — managing active disputes, pre-litigation demand letters, regulatory inquiries, and arbitrations across commercial, employment, and data-related matters
- Serving as primary in-house point of contact with outside litigation counsel: scoping engagements, controlling spend, driving strategy, and keeping leadership informed with clear and timely updates
- Building and maintaining litigation infrastructure: legal hold procedures, matter tracking, outside counsel guidelines, and internal escalation protocols
- Partnering with Privacy, Compliance, and Security teams on data retention guidelines
- Advising cross-functional stakeholders — Sales, Product, Engineering, People — on litigation risk, preservation obligations, and dispute-avoidance strategy in plain, actionable terms
- Identifying patterns across the litigation portfolio that signal systemic product, operational, or contractual risk and surfacing those insights proactively to leadership
- Supporting the broader legal team on commercial disputes arising from customer and vendor agreements, including working closely with Commercial Counsel on escalated matters
- Managing discovery workstreams, including coordinating with internal teams on document collection and review and managing e-discovery vendors where applicable
Qualifications:
- Significant litigation experience, with a track record of managing complex commercial, data, or employment disputes as lead or co-lead counsel; in-house litigation experience strongly preferred
- Demonstrated ability to manage outside counsel effectively — scoping engagements, pushing back on strategy and spend, and maintaining appropriate in-house ownership of key decisions
- Comfort with matters at the intersection of litigation and data privacy, including consumer class actions, regulatory inquiries, and disputes involving data practices; familiarity with CCPA, GDPR, or similar frameworks is a plus
- Strong business judgment and ability to translate litigation risk into practical, risk-adjusted recommendations for non-lawyer stakeholders
- Excellent written and oral communication skills — able to distill complex matters into clear executive updates and cross-functional guidance
- Project management discipline: able to track a live docket and keep multiple matters moving simultaneously
- Prior experience building or improving litigation infrastructure (hold procedures, matter tracking, outside counsel guidelines) preferred
- Comfort with fast-paced, resource-constrained environments where scope is broad and priorities shift
- Curiosity and range — genuine interest in understanding Apollo's product, data practices, and business model as context for legal risk
- Comfortable using AI tools to enhance research, drafting, and workflow efficiency
- J.D. and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar

We believe legal should enable business, not block it. We move with focus and urgency, communicate with courage, and take ownership of outcomes — not just effort. We're also kind of nerdy, and we think that's a feature. If you made it this far and recognized yourself in more than a few of these bullet points, that's a good sign.
