The Sr. Controls Design Engineer will own, lead and enforce Severfarm’s global design standards and architectures for MQTT, API and other automation telemetry datalinks from new and existing data centers in ServerFarm’s fleet.
This role will be responsible for (1) driving quality by partnering with Global Network Operations Center (GNOC), Data Center IT (DCIT), InCommand and Operations to define and implement design standards for secure architectures for the delivery of low-latency, error free MQTT, API and other telemetry protocols to secure end-points for use by internal and external customers for operational excellence, billing and compliance reporting requirements at-scale; (2) develop and Implement telemetry plans that include advanced technology solutions and automation tools to deliver efficiencies and enhance and grow the future capabilities of the GNOC and InCommand platforms;  (3) partner with data center IT (DCIT), operations and field engineering to create the Internet of Things (IoT) audit template to finalize and implement Controls Normalization Plans for ServerFarm’s existing data center fleet remediation and continual improvement initiatives.
This role is pivotal in enhancing ServerFarm’s competitive edge through delivery of cutting-edge technology solutions that are aligned for Operations and business requirements and future growth.

Key Accountabilities

  • Partner with operation teams, DCIT, InCommand and 3rd party vendors to develop and publish design standards and specifications, technical roadmaps and runbooks for the deployment of secure IoT telemetry data link solutions at new and existing data centers that will support telemetry transport of API, MQTT, SMTP, SNMP and other protocols for ServerFarm and customers’ service level agreements (SLA).
  • Create the telemetry plans for the delivery of low-latency and secure telemetry data using ServerFarm’s engineered datalink architectures using industry standards and best practices. Provide QA/QC oversight of hardware and software installations, reviewing proposals and programming through the build, testing and deployment process.
  • Lead pilot programs and oversee innovation rollout with stakeholder input.  Develop plans for base configuration programming, mapping and integration of new solutions and features to leverage available telemetry and automation for wider implementation of standardization across the global data center portfolio.
  • Diagnose, repair and optimize telemetry datalink issues and have ability to test and write modifications in multiple system software languages and operating systems.
  • Author scopes of work and technical whitepapers for review, approval and implementation.
  • Define requirements for Internet of Things (IoT) gateway solutions.  Engage with internal stakeholders and vendors to ensure solutions are defined, configured and successfully delivered.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer applications, network architecture or commensurate industry experience or military experience in lieu of degree may be acceptable.
  • 5+ years of non-intern experience in controls engineering (Niagara, Siemens, JCI, Allerton, ABB, Schneider Electric, Honeywell, Emmerson, Rockwell and/or Ignition), including field servicing, programming development, start-up, and commissioning of critical controls systems server, network and field devices management.
  • Knowledge and experience of Linux or other Unix operating systems as well as proficiency in scripting and programming automation via Bash/shell scripting with one or more of Python (preferred), Perl, Ruby, Shell, Java, etc.
  • 5+ years’ experience developing engineering, deployment, or operations mechanisms to support IP network, IoT, and/or networking systems. Proven track record in creating and releasing high quality, consistent documentation for processes, standards, procedures and reports.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts, and root cause analysis (RCA) to both technical, non-technical stakeholders and leadership.

  • Thorough understanding of TCP/IP networking, IP routing, Server Load Balancing, and Network Security       architecture and core technologies such as IP, TCP, OSPF/IS-IS, BGP, MPLS, Server Load Balancers, Firewalls, ACLs, DNS, DHCP, IPAM, LDAP, NFS, etc.
  • Knowledge of critical infrastructure, building operations, mechanical plant strategies, BMS/EPMS programming concepts, control diagrams, industrial HVAC, electrical line-ups, one-line diagrams, and complex environmental and electrical concepts.
  • Ability to develop new concepts through exploration, design, testing and into deployment/mass production.
  • Experience of designing, developing or operating services running on AWS, Azure or other cloud provider services.
  • Experience in project management and project engineering, with a proven track record of delivering projects on time and within budget.
  • CCNP, CNNA, CCIE, VMware, AWS, CompTIA, Juniper, MCSE, MS Azure, ACMA or GCP certification
