We're looking for a talented and experienced commercial counsel to join our Commercial Legal team focused on our US Public Sector customer base!
In this role, you will work with internal business partners (like Sales and Trust), and other Legal team members to review and respond to requests from current and prospective US public sector customers (in federal, state and local governments, and education). This is a great opportunity to join a growing legal team and support strategic projects and transactions for Atlassian.
This is a remote position and will liaise directly with Sales team and customers based in the United States. To help our teams work together effectively, this role requires you to be located in the United States Eastern time zone.
In this role, you will:
  • Join a small (but mighty!) team building the framework to support our US Public Sector cloud business.
  • Provide pragmatic, business-minded guidance on customer requests and contract-related issues, especially statutory-related requests from public sector customers.
  • Analyze and negotiate reseller sales agreements including contract vehicles and flowdown terms.
  • Review customer requests and work with internal business partners to fulfill such requests in accordance with company processes and policies; seek and obtain internal approvals for modifications to standard terms or processes as needed.
  • Draft terms and liaise with the Product and Engineering teams to support the continued development of Atlassian's FedRAMP products and related compliance.
  • Negotiate contracts from drafting to execution, including contract generation, redlining, exhibit coordination, approval escalation, record management and post-execution support and compliance.

More about you:
  • You take ownership, roll up your sleeves, and get things done.
  • You work collaboratively and develop positive relationships with business stakeholders to strengthen the connection between our team and the business - with a sense of humor and resiliency, under tight deadlines, and while managing multiple priorities.
  • You can kindly and easily translate the alphabet soup of government procurement to counterparts who have less familiarity.
  • You enjoy getting deals done, while managing customer risk.
  • You effectively navigate a decentralized and complex organization spread around the globe.
  • You have a strong understanding of software technology and cloud services, associated business models, and technology industry trends, especially within the US public sector.
  • You think creatively beyond the "legal box" to generate possible solutions and options for the business, clearly articulating risk-based recommendations.

On your first day, we'll expect you to have:
  • 7+ years experience of public sector SaaS agreement negotiation experience, particularly with government customers in the defense and intelligence communities. A security clearance is a plus!
  • Deep understanding of the FAR and DFARS.
  • FedRAMP compliance + contracting familiarity.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and education procurement processes. Including understanding contract vehicles (GSA, CA SLP, NY OGS, etc.).
  • Experience developing and maintaining efficient processes for a busy commercial legal team.
  • Passion for understanding our customers, products, culture, and business model.
  • Excellent business judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to work flexibly with a variety of teams.
  • Ability to handle competing priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Willingness to handle new areas of responsibility.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment on key decisions in the contracts administration function, including recognizing circumstances that require escalation.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
