Roche pRED's  BioX Genetics & Genomics (G&G) team within the Pharmaceutical Sciences (PS) organization is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Biomarker Scientist to drive cutting-edge genetic and genomics research. Based in Basel within our BioX Genetics and Genomics Chapter, you will lead the development and implementation of advanced genomic solutions for early clinical trials and preclinical safety studies across diverse disease areas.

This impactful role offers a chance to provide matrix leadership, leveraging your creative ideas and deep technological insights to deliver high-quality, decision-enabling data in early drug development.

The opportunity

As a senior and engaged Biomarker Scientist, you will:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and execute biomarker studies

  • Lead the development, validation, and implementation of clinical genetics and genomics assays for novel therapeutics (e.g., small molecules, large molecules, gene therapies) across therapeutic areas like Cardiovascular & Metabolic, Neuroscience, Ophthalmology, Oncology and Immunology.

  • Manage technology/assay transfers and ensure assay reliability with CRO partners.

  • Provide translational safety assessments, offering mechanistic insights for various drug modalities (eg. siRNAs and Antisense Oligonucleotides).

  • Innovate by evaluating and applying novel genetics and genomics technologies to maximize insights from precious samples.

  • Enhance scientific reputation through data interpretation, presentations, and publications.

  • Mentor junior scientists and manage external collaborations.

Who You Are
  • A PhD, MD, or equivalent in molecular biology, biochemistry, genomics, or a related field, with 5+ years of experience in clinical genomics assay development within pharma (preferred), biotech, or academia.

  • Extensive experience in the development, validation, implementation, and GLP-quality reporting of clinical (genetic and genomic) biomarker assays and related understanding of regulations.

  • Deep expertise in tissue processing, qPCR/ddPCR, NGS, RNA profiling, single-cell RNAseq, spatial transcriptomics, and multi-omic approaches.

  • Strong knowledge of bioinformatic tools for genomic data analysis and interpretation; expertise in population genetics is a plus.

  • Familiarity with preclinical safety strategies is a plus.

  • A strategic mindset, self-initiative, and strong accountability, with an ability to challenge, be challenged, and continuously learn

  • A collaborative spirit, thriving in an agile matrix environment, simplifying complexity, and prioritizing for patient impact.

We offer an impactful role in a state-of-the-art genetics and genomics team at Roche pRED. You will have opportunities to shape pre-clinical safety, early clinical trials, and precision medicine in a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment. What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
