Job Description SummaryThe primary objective of this position is to use data assimilation to incorporate remotely sensed and in situ weather observations into next-generation atmospheric models to improve the prediction of the atmosphere, especially where it relates to aircraft operations. The Aerospace Carbon Solutions business unit of GE Aerospace is committed to helping its customers navigate the complexities of their non-carbon dioxide impacts on climate. Water vapor, gasses, and particulates emitted by aircraft affect the radiation balance of the planet and GE Aerospace is uniquely positioned to quantify those impacts from past, current, and future flights as well as identify engineering, technical, and navigational solutions to reduce those impacts. The person filling this position is expected to solve complex problems that require regular use of ingenuity and creativity, often in consultation with peers. They will have considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of various assignments while under general guidance of the scientific or program leader.Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Design and conduct experiments to determine optimal improvements to assimilation and forecast systems in the latest generation global atmospheric model.
  • Contribute to the design and development of a statistical framework around the modeling system for observation impact assessment.
  • Act as principal lead in the testing and deploying observation impact techniques for past experiments and possibly real-time operations.
  • Document results of the research in internal reports and/or journal publications.
  • Work closely with the software development team in Cambridge, England.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A PhD. in science, mathematics or engineering and at least five years of experience in atmospheric science, numerical weather prediction (NWP), or remote sensing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in satellite data assimilation and impact of observations evaluation.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Advanced knowledge of satellite data assimilation and of NWP model verification.
  • Advanced mathematical understanding of algebra, matrix manipulation and adjoint operators.
  • Thorough understanding of environmental observation evaluation using forecast sensitivity, and both adjoint-based and ensemble-based techniques.
  • Thorough understanding of high-performance computing environments.
  • Programming skills of Fortran and/or C++.
  • Programming skills of Python 3.0 or later and Python visualization tools.
  • Thorough understanding of high-performance computing environments.
  • Experience with cloud computing is desired.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Pay and Benefits:

  • The base pay range for this position is $142,100 - 200,000. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary/ commission based on the plan.  This posting is expected to close on July 4th, 2025.
