Sales Tax Manager - Consulting

Our State and Local Tax (SALT) team is seeking a Sales Tax Manager with a strong background in Sales & Use Tax Consulting. This role is ideal for professionals who enjoy solving complex tax issues, advising clients on tax strategies, and driving value through proactive planning and risk mitigation.

What You’ll Do:

As a Sales Tax Consulting Manager, you will:

• Serve as a trusted advisor to clients on sales and use tax matters, including nexus analysis, taxability reviews, audit defense, and process optimization.

• Lead multi-state consulting engagements, providing strategic guidance on tax planning, risk management, and technology enablement.

• Collaborate with internal teams and clients to identify opportunities for tax savings, process improvements, and automation.

• Stay current on legislative changes and emerging trends in indirect tax and communicate their impact to clients and internal stakeholders.

• Support business development efforts by identifying consulting opportunities and contributing to proposals and presentations.

• Mentor and develop junior staff, fostering a culture of learning and excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Client Advisory & Strategic Consulting

• Conduct taxability and nexus studies across jurisdictions.

• Advise clients on sales tax implications of business expansions, restructurings, and system implementations.

• Assist with audit defense and controversy resolution, including negotiation with taxing authorities.

• Recommend and implement process improvements and automation strategies using tools like Vertex, Avalara, and Alteryx.

Project Leadership

• Manage multiple consulting engagements simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery and high-quality outcomes.

• Coordinate with cross-functional teams to deliver integrated solutions.

• Communicate project status, risks, and opportunities to clients and firm leadership.

Thought Leadership & Development

• Monitor and interpret legislative and regulatory changes affecting sales and use tax.

• Contribute to internal and external thought leadership through articles, webinars, and presentations.

• Participate in professional organizations and networking events to build relationships and enhance visibility.

What You Bring:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or CMI designation is a plus.

• Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in sales and use tax consulting, preferably in a public accounting or advisory firm.

• Strong technical knowledge of multi-state sales and use tax laws and regulations.

• Experience with tax automation tools (Vertex, Avalara, Alteryx) and ERP systems.

• Excellent communication, project management, and client service skills.

• Proven ability to lead teams and manage complex engagements.
