Job Summary

This position is a data management/programming position for the Cardiovascular Genetics Center within the Cardiovascular Division. The primary role of the data manager/programmer will include database creation and improvement, data management, and data cleaning as well as report generation for ongoing clinical epidemiological research projects, including large cohort studies and genetic-epidemiological studies. Duties include programming (SAS, R), database creation (REDCap or SQL), data management, data harmonization and cleaning, report design and generation, user interface design, and creation and maintenance of SOPs/documentation. The RDM will oversee the merging and tracking of multiple streams of data, including demographic data, longitudinal cardiac imaging and clinical data, and genomics data. With oversight from lead statisticians, will assist in statistical analyses. The RDM will provide input on improving data capture, assist with implementation and oversight of data management and maintenance (e.g. documentation, SOP creation), assist with intermediate and final report generation, provide quality assurance monitoring and monitoring for data anomalies from data input from various sources and sites, conduct basic statistical analyses, and to assist with preparation of manuscripts and grant applications.


 

Qualifications

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains SOPs for data collection, data management, and reporting procedures for the program and for specific projects.
  • Performs programming in SAS or R to support data curation, harmonization and maintenance activities across multiple studies, to assist with maintaining the integrity of collected data over time, and to allow transfer of complex physiological and biological data captures using proprietary software to the department’s databases.
  • Performs statistical/data programming and basic analysis, and summarizes data with appropriate descriptive statistics as necessary.
  • Assists in the building and maintaining of SQL or REDCap databases to support data capture, data checking, and analytic dataset preparation for ongoing projects.
  • Maintains detailed written documentation of created databases and data dictionaries for use by biostatisticians and other research staff.
  • Maintains detailed written documentation of all data programming and data archival systems.
  • Performs ongoing data cleaning, generates queries of potential data errors or inconsistencies and works with the investigators and project managers/coordinators to resolve issues.
  • Assists in the writing and preparation of research reports, including internal documentation, academic publication, and research presentations at national meetings.
  • Contributes to interim and final project reports and provides data-related input for new proposals and manuscripts.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science-related field plus one year’s work experience required or Masters degree in epidemiology, biostatistics or similar field.
  • One to two years of SAS or R programming experience.
  • Extensive expertise with SQL
  • Understanding of the scientific method and the research lifecycle.
  • One to two years of database management experience and/or training or equivalent training and experience.

Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required:

  • Ability to productively interact with investigators, biostatisticians, informaticians, and research staff to accomplish project goals.
  • Highly organized, with decision-making skills, initiative, and ability to work as part of a growing data management team.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills, flexibility, and ability to interact with a diverse and large research team including physician investigators, statisticians, bioinformaticians, and research assistants.
  • Fundamental knowledge of data management, clinical research, epidemiology, and biostatistics.
