About the role

We are seeking an experienced Recovery (Subrogation) Specialist to manage recovery opportunities across property and casualty claims. You will investigate liability, assess recovery potential, develop recovery strategies, and negotiate settlements with responsible parties, insurers, and their representatives.

This role requires strong investigative skills, sound claims judgment, and the ability to independently manage a portfolio from initial referral through resolution.

Key responsibilities

  • Review claims to identify and evaluate subrogation, contribution, and other recovery opportunities.

  • Investigate liability and assess comparative fault, causation, damages, available coverage, and collectability.

  • Gather and analyze supporting evidence, including claim notes, policies, photographs, incident reports, repair estimates, invoices, and expert reports.

  • Develop and execute recovery strategies based on the strength of the evidence, expected recovery, cost, and applicable deadlines.

  • Prepare clear, well-supported demand packages and respond to disputes over liability and damages.

  • Negotiate settlements with insurers, third parties, attorneys, and other representatives within delegated authority.

  • Identify and track statutes of limitation, notice requirements, and other recovery deadlines, escalating legal questions when appropriate.

  • Prepare files for arbitration or litigation and coordinate with counsel, experts, and recovery vendors as needed.

  • Partner with claims handlers to preserve evidence and recovery rights early in the claim lifecycle.

  • Maintain accurate documentation, recovery forecasts, and timely status updates in the claims management system.

  • Track settlement commitments and payments, reconcile recoveries, and ensure appropriate file closure.

  • Recommend improvements to referral criteria, workflows, and recovery practices.

Required qualifications

  • At least 4 years of hands-on experience in P&C subrogation or claims recovery.

  • Demonstrated experience managing a recovery portfolio independently, from investigation through settlement and collection.

  • Strong understanding of negligence, liability allocation, insurance coverage, and subrogation principles.

  • Proven ability to evaluate damages and negotiate disputed claims.

  • Excellent written communication skills, including preparation of persuasive recovery demands.

  • Strong organization and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage competing deadlines.

  • Proficiency with claims management systems, spreadsheets, and remote collaboration tools.

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in a remote environment.

  • Any licenses required for the assigned responsibilities and jurisdictions.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience handling recoveries across multiple P&C lines, including personal or commercial auto, property, or general liability.

  • Experience preparing and managing intercompany arbitration submissions.

  • Experience coordinating litigated recoveries with external counsel.

  • Relevant insurance designations, such as CSRP, AIC, or CPCU.

What success looks like

  • Recovery opportunities are identified promptly and pursued with clear, documented strategies.

  • Demand packages are accurate, complete, and supported by evidence.

  • Recoveries reflect sound negotiation and cost-effective decision-making.

  • Deadlines are met, files remain current, and stakeholders receive timely updates.

  • Payments are collected and reconciled promptly, with accurate reporting throughout the recovery lifecycle.
