Job Description:

Dow Jones Newswires is hiring a Publishing Editor for our real-time desk in New York.

We deliver market-moving business, finance and economic news to professional investors who need speed and accuracy during the trading day.

This is a live desk role. You will monitor multiple feeds (press releases, SEC filings, earnings materials, economic data and company alerts), make fast editorial decisions, and keep the news file moving under heavy deadlines. You will ensure market-moving information is published immediately—first via flash headlines, then via concise, publish-ready updates and quick context.

You Will:
  • Publish flash headlines in seconds -often a series - from press releases, SEC filings, earnings reports and conference calls.

  • Edit and publish short market updates (typically 100–200 words) in ~8–10 minutes, adding essential context (prior period, guidance, deal terms, revisions, “why it matters”).

  • Run the newsflow during busy windows: prioritize, coordinate, prevent duplication, and maintain consistent standards.

  • Assign coverage to reporters and route copy to editors in real time.

  • Headline and edit key economic indicators (jobs, inflation, retail sales, housing, manufacturing), including revisions.

  • Use newsroom tools, metadata and internal coding correctly so content reaches the right feeds quickly.

  • Support carefully managed newsroom automation/GenAI pilots, including editorial QA before publication.

  • Uphold Dow Jones standards, accuracy and ethics.

You Have:
  • At least 3-5 years of real-time editing/production experience (wires, markets desk, breaking news, live environments).

  • Speed under pressure: You are comfortable with numbers, earnings language and corporate disclosures and are able to publish flash headlines in seconds and edit/publish 100–200 word updates in ~8–10 minutes—accurately and repeatedly.

  • Market news judgment: You can make fast, independent calls under pressure—without sacrificing accuracy. strong instinct for what is market-moving vs noise; can prioritize and run a live queue during busy windows.

  • Economic data competence: able to headline and edit key macro releases (jobs, inflation, retail sales, housing, manufacturing), including revisions and “why it matters.”

  • Clear, clean writing: can write tight headlines and short takes with unambiguous language for a professional investor audience.

  • Desk coordination / assignment: able to assign coverage to reporters and route copy to editors in real time to keep the file moving.

  • Workflow and publishing systems: strong command of newsroom tools, metadata/coding/tagging and house style; operationally reliable.

  • High accuracy standards: strong attention to detail with numbers, tickers, attribution and timing; understands the cost of errors in markets news.

  • Comfort with new tools: interested in improving speed/quality through technology, including participating in carefully managed automation/GenAI pilots and editorial QA.

  • You are proactive, communicate clearly and work well across teams.

Shift 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 11:30-7:30 p.m.

To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter detailing how you would do the job, and five examples of your best work by August 21st. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and we encourage early submission as the position may be filled before the deadline.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
