The Opportunity

At Root, we’ve reimagined car insurance to make it smarter, more equitable, and a better experience for all. Using the power of telematics, Root offers customers auto insurance based on how they drive, not based solely on their demographics. With its technology-forward products, Root is working to fundamentally change an industry for the better.

As the Product Manager over Billing & Payments, you'll focus on creating seamless experiences that make it effortless for customers to pay for and maintain their policies. This role will be responsible for driving initiatives that optimize the entire payments ecosystem at Root, including payment methods, billing cycles, payment reminders, past-due handling, and related customer touchpoints that directly impact retention.
The ideal candidate will have a strong customer-centric mindset, experience with payment systems and processes, and the ability to understand complex financial transactions while simplifying them for users. You should be passionate about removing friction from payment flows and finding innovative ways to turn routine billing interactions into opportunities to strengthen customer relationships. This role requires excellent collaboration skills with finance, operations, and engineering teams, plus the flexibility to adapt to a rapidly evolving fintech landscape.

Root is a “work where it works best” company. This means we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US.

Salary Range: $119,000 - $149,000 (Bonus and LTI Eligible)

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Drive execution of the 2025 Billing & Payments roadmap while defining the vision for 2026

  • Partner with research and design to deeply understand customer needs, pain points, and opportunities within the billing and payment experiences

  • Create seamless payment experiences that remove friction and make it easy for customers to maintain their policies

  • Develop retention strategies and features that showcase Root's value and encourage long-term relationships

  • Lead a team of engineers through the full product lifecycle, from ideation to implementation and iteration

  • Write clear product requirement documentation (PRDs) that align business strategy with engineering plans

  • Cultivate a prioritized product backlog using robust product frameworks and data-driven decision making

  •  Measure and analyze the performance of your product area, using insights to drive continuous improvement

  • Facilitate team delivery events using agile practices to ensure consistent, high-quality outputs

What You Will Need to Succeed

  • 4+ years of product management experience; retention-focused experience highly valued

  • Experience with subscription or recurring payment products and customer retention strategies

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to derive meaningful insights from customer data

  • Experience with complex technical systems and integrations, ideally billing & payment experience

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex concepts into simple user experiences

  • Experience in agile development methodologies

  • Customer-centric mindset with demonstrated success in improving user experiences

  • Detail-oriented with the ability to multitask and prioritize effectively

  • Adaptable approach to scope and responsibilities in a growing organization

  • Collaborative work style with the ability to influence without direct authority

  • Roll-up-the-sleeves work ethic and "do-what-it-takes" attitude to drive results in a fast-paced environment

As part of Root's interview process, we kindly ask that all candidates be on camera for virtual interviews. This helps us create a more personal and engaging experience for both you and our interviewers. Being on camera is a standard requirement for our process and part of how we assess fit and communication style, so we do require it to move forward with any applicant's candidacy. If you have any concerns, feel free to let us know once you are contacted. We’re happy to talk it through.

Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
