Luma’s mission is to build unified general intelligence that can generate, understand, and operate in the physical world.
We believe that multimodality is critical for intelligence. To go beyond language models and build more aware, capable and useful systems, the next step function change will come from vision. So, we are working on training and scaling up multimodal foundation models for systems that can see and understand, show and explain, and eventually interact with our world to effect change.
We are looking for a hands-on generalist with impeccable taste and a strong, opinionated design perspective. This is not a role for hyper-specialists or managers. You will take ownership of projects and drive the design vision from a fuzzy concept to a polished, shipped feature with a high degree of autonomy. You will tackle the unique challenge of designing novel, intuitive interaction paradigms for an AI-native product, making abstract concepts feel tangible and magical.
We are open to both full-time and contract-to-hire candidates, depending on experience, mutual fit, and team needs.
At Luma, AI is not a feature we design around. It is how we work. We expect designers to think with AI, generate with AI, build with AI, and use it to accelerate everything from ideation to production. If you have already made this shift in how you work, you will thrive here.
- Own features end-to-end. Lead the design process for major features, from initial product thinking and user exploration to pixel-perfect visual design and high-fidelity interactive prototypes.
- Design novel interactions. Go beyond static screens. Design and prototype fluid, novel interactions for a new medium, taking complex AI concepts and making them feel intuitive and powerful.
- Build functional prototypes with AI. Use AI coding tools to create working prototypes and shippable features, working in close collaboration with engineering. We value designers who can make real things, not just mockups.
- Uphold a high bar for craft. Create exceptionally high-quality visual designs, interactions, and prototypes, demonstrating world-class taste and an obsession with detail.
- Drive work forward through ambiguity. Operate effectively in a fast-paced startup environment where direction is not always clear. Step into problems before being asked, make decisions with incomplete information, and push work forward independently.
- Collaborate across disciplines. Work closely with engineers, product, and AI researchers to explore new use cases, shape product strategy, and ensure the design vision ships at high quality. Design at Luma is not a solo discipline. Outcomes are built across teams.
- You have 5+ years of experience building delightful and innovative products at scale.
- You are equally strong in craft and product thinking. You demonstrate excellence across visual design, interaction design, and product thinking.
- You integrate AI deeply into how you work. AI is visibly woven into your portfolio and your process. You can speak concretely about how AI has changed the way you design and the outcomes you produce. You have experience building functional prototypes using AI coding tools like Cursor or Claude Code.
- You ship. Your portfolio demonstrates work that made it to production, not just explorations and concepts. You show the full arc: how you framed the problem, how the work evolved, and what impact it had.
- You show your thinking. Your portfolio includes prototypes, iterations, and experimentation, not just polished final deliverables. You can articulate what you prioritized, what you cut, and why.
- You move fast and converge. You are comfortable with rapid exploration and know when to stop iterating and commit to a direction. You balance craft with speed.
- You create momentum. You have a track record of driving work forward without being asked, influencing decisions across teams, and raising the quality bar around you.
A portfolio is required for consideration.
We are looking for generalists, but candidates who bring depth in one or both of the following areas will stand out:
- Creative tools experience. You have designed for complex creative software, such as video or photo editors, design tools, or developer tools. You have a deep, intuitive understanding of creative workflows and the mindset of a creator.
- World-class interaction design. Your portfolio is full of fluid, delightful micro-interactions, complex state transitions, and prototypes that go beyond static mockups. You can take abstract AI concepts and make them feel tangible and magical.
Please note that this role is hybrid, based in our Redwood City office three days per week. Relocation assistance is available for candidates outside the Bay Area.
The base pay range for this role is $225,000 – $325,000 per year.
