About Alumni Ventures

Alumni Ventures is one of the world’s most active venture capital platforms, with $1.4B+ in assets raised and investments in 1,300+ companies. Our network of 850,000+ members and 40+ dedicated investors connects accredited individuals to high-quality venture deals—typically reserved for institutions—through our alumni-driven communities and diversified co-investment strategy. With offices in Boston, New York, Chicago, Menlo Park, and Manchester, NH, we’re rapidly growing and committed to fueling entrepreneurial success while developing the next generation of VC professionals.

About the Role

We’re hiring a full-time Principal to join our team. As Principal, you’ll be at the forefront of sourcing, evaluating, and executing deals for our Harvard, Dartmouth, Women’s Fund and US Strategic Tech Fund, while collaborating across the broader AV platform.

The role is fundamentally T-shaped. It is a generalist investing role spanning sectors and stages, but with the encouragement to develop thesis areas. The center of our focus is on Seed and Series A as well as some investing in Pre-Seed and Growth-stage opportunities. You’ll help shape a portfolio of 25 investments annually, with 25+ follow-on opportunities, deliver top-tier fund performance, and strengthen our position in the venture ecosystem.

You’ll work closely with the Managing Partner, Senior Associates, and broader team to identify high-potential companies, lead diligence and negotiation, and nurture relationships with founders, co-investors, and industry partners. Your network will be critical here. Cultivating relationships with colleagues, VCs, and founders to navigate your way into the most elite deals is essential. Your success will come from creativity, warmth, and smarts.

This is a hybrid role with an expectation of at least four days in the office each week. Alumni Ventures is a fast-paced, professional, entrepreneurial environment.

What You'll Do

Deal Sourcing

  • Proactively source and contribute high-quality leads that align with the team’s investment thesis and firm-wide initiatives.
  • Drive a strong conversion rate from sourced deals to qualified investment opportunities.

Due Diligence

  • Lead initial due diligence on potential investments, engaging directly with founders, customers, and market data.
  • Analyze market trends, competitive landscapes, and emerging opportunities to strengthen investment decisions.

Investment Success

  • Contribute to the successful execution of approved investments, from term sheet to close.
  • Maintain tight alignment with the firm’s investment strategy to build a high-performing, well-balanced portfolio.

Network Development

  • Grow and leverage a robust network of founders, VCs, and industry experts to gain access to top-tier deal flow.
  • Build relationships that expand the firm’s visibility and influence in the venture ecosystem.

Administrative Support to Fundraising

  • Partner with the team to support fundraising activities, investor relations, and community engagement through events, webinars, and thought leadership.

Assist with Portfolio Management

  • Actively manage and support portfolio companies, fostering growth and long-term value creation.
  • Monitor portfolio performance through regular CEO check-ins, performance tracking, and strategic guidance.
Who You Are
  • Alumni of Harvard strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
  • 7+ years of professional experience in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, consulting, or startups.
  • Hands-on familiarity with AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney, Gemini) and ability to integrate them into team workflows.

Compensation includes a starting base salary of $175,000 plus equity, carry potential, and corporate bonus.

Our benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, 401k match, HSA, FSA, Life Insurance, Pet Insurance, Flexible PTO, and Parental Leave as well as career development.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
