We are searching for the best talent for Principal UX Designer. This position will be located in Santa Clara, CA. Remote consideration will be given to exceptional talent.
Purpose:
As a Principal UX Designer on the User Experience Design team, you will drive experience definition for a portfolio of robotic systems, providing the GUI, light and sound of the systems.
Working closely with colleagues in Software Engineering, Industrial Design, Human Factors and Product Management, you will advance the definition of J&J's vision for surgical robotics. Every day, you will bring to life experience visions, aligning designs across the team to the roadmap, and crafting the best user experience for the entire medical team.
Surgery is a team sport, so you will be encouraged to become familiar with a range of user types across a variety of clinical specialties. You'll bring your passion for design to a broad range of projects using both internal and external resources. Although the scope of your work is focused on digital interactions, this role should consider the physical experience as well.
As a leader within the UX Design team, you'll also help shape a team culture that is inclusive, creative and obsessed with improving experiences for our users. We strive to create impactful work while also creating a positive environment for us all to work in.
You will be responsible for:
- Craft visions, concepts and UX strategies - both autonomously and working with other designers - for the OTTAVA™ and MONARCH™ family of medical robots
- Take charge of ambiguous and complex scenarios in the robotic experiences all the way to design definition and implementation
- Build out and ensure adherence to an evolving design system that meets the needs of multiple user interactions
- Ensure UX team is delivering designs at a high level, including workflows, pixel-perfect screens, and robust documentation, all tying back to applicable user requirements
- Work with Marketing and project leadership to refine and advise the product roadmap
- Partner within Software and Robotic Controls to bring life to new insights and functions that improve the surgical operating room
- Mentor and develop talent of more junior UX Designers on the team
Skills and Experience:
Required:
- Bachelor's or equivalent experience in Human-Computer Interaction, Digital/Visual Design, Industrial Design or other related field. Masters or other higher level degrees are a plus and will be considered as part of the applicant's professional experience
- At least 10 years of proven ability to design digital experiences for highly sophisticated systems and/or medical devices (or Masters plus 8 years)
- 4+ years experience technically leading teams of UX designers in solving problems and generating compelling solutions
- Experience influencing and leading stakeholders without direct management responsibility
- Experience with end-to-end product development with multiple products launched
- Experience producing designs for embedded UIs though touch, sound, 3D vision and/or AR/VR, collaborating with industrial designers and user researchers
- Proficiency with typical UX design tools (Figma, Adobe Suite, etc.) and prototyping tools (e.g. Protopie, Principle, etc.)
- Strong portfolio demonstrating an outcome-focused, innovative design process and interaction design expertise
Preferred:
- Familiarity with the regulations of the medical or pharmaceutical industry
- Experience with AR/VR design
