About Upstart

Upstart is the leading AI lending marketplace partnering with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit. By leveraging Upstart's AI marketplace, Upstart-powered banks and credit unions can have higher approval rates and lower loss rates across races, ages, and genders, while simultaneously delivering the exceptional digital-first lending experience their customers demand. More than 80% of borrowers are approved instantly, with zero documentation to upload.

Upstart is a digital-first company, which means that most Upstarters live and work anywhere in the United States. However, we also have offices in San Mateo, California; Columbus, Ohio; and Austin, Texas.

Most Upstarters join us because they connect with our mission of enabling access to effortless credit based on true risk. If you are energized by the impact you can make at Upstart, we’d love to hear from you!

The Team:

As the Principal PM, Intelligent Finance at Upstart, you will lead Upstart in forging a path combining a new technology-agentic AI - with a core part of our mission: helping people make choices that make them more likely to achieve their financial goals. This is a net new product, so you’ll be founding this team in close partnership with a couple of our senior leaders.

How you’ll make an impact

  • Define and drive the product vision for an AI financial advisor that ingests complex financial data and delivers personalized, actionable guidance.
  • Partner with engineering and design to prototype, test, and launch agentic AI features that make financial  recommendations.
  • Translate messy user inputs and 3p data into simple, coherent inputs for the advisor to consistently gather and work from.
  • Establish the product strategy and roadmap from zero-to-one, making foundational decisions that shape how the product scales.
  • Collaborate with compliance, risk, and business stakeholders to ensure solutions are both innovative and responsible.
  • Act as the connective tissue across disciplines, unblocking challenges and ensuring speed without sacrificing quality or trust.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 4+ years of product management experience on a fast-moving team with medium+ enterprise clients.
  • Demonstrated success in driving business outcomes through a balance of quant metrics and qual understanding. You’re clever and enterprising when it comes to having the minimum data necessary to make an informed decision. Your risk tolerance is well honed.
  • Strong product sense.  You have independently authored and executed on a multi-quarter roadmap, and have been around to see the consequences (good and bad) of your decisions.
  • Rigorous and analytical problem solving; well structured, concise, and highly effective communication.
  • Ownership and growth mindset. You act like an owner. You’re often right, but humble and open minded about being wrong. You’re perpetually dissatisfied and striving to improve yourself and the team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior 0-1 experience, preferably as a founder / product lead.
  • Experience with b2c retention.
  • Aptitude for and interest in credit and personal finance economic concepts.
  • Demonstrated mission orientation (any mission!), and outsized results to match.
  • Experience within GenAI/LLM

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
