Job Description:

Microchip has an opportunity for a Principal Engineer-Environmental/Safety (Principal Environmental Engineer) in the Environmental Health and Safety department at our Fab 4 semiconductor manufacturing facility in Gresham, Oregon. 

This position reports to the site Environmental Manager. They are responsible for ensuring that the facility complies with all environmental regulations and standards related to air, water, hazardous waste, recycling, and related environmental programs. They will also lead process improvement and cost reduction projects.

They will maintain effective relationships to communicate with all levels of the organization across functional areas including specialists, technicians, engineers and managers as well as customers, contractors and suppliers.

Essential Functions

  • Lead and participate in cross-functional teams and manage multidisciplinary projects, including budgets and construction activities, to meet regulatory deadlines and department objectives.

  • Ensure ongoing compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations, industry standards and best practices for air, wastewater, stormwater, hazardous waste, recycling and related environmental programs.

  • Monitor, interpret, and implement new and emerging environmental regulations and standards.

  • Investigate environmental issues, implement corrective actions, and support continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Provide training and support to employees across all shifts.

  • Perform hands-on tasks such as equipment calibration, site inspections (indoor and outdoor), and material handling.

  • Apply chemistry and engineering knowledge to evaluate process alternatives and work with internal teams and suppliers.

  • Prepare regulatory submittals (e.g., TRI, Tier II, Hazardous Waste Report, Discharge Monitoring Reports, Air Emissions Inventory, SPCC, and SWPCP reports).

Requirements/Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree - Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental, or related discipline.

  • 10+ years of experience in environmental compliance, preferably in a highly regulated manufacturing environment.

  • Strong knowledge of EPA, ODEQ, ISO 14001 and other applicable environmental regulations and standards.

  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently, manage numerous projects and prioritize tasks.

  • Ability to follow written specifications and written and verbal guidance.

  • Team player. Professional, respectful, and accountable to colleagues, internal customers, and external customers. Ability to take initiative and ownership.

  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental regulations.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent presentation skills.

  • Proficient with MS Office products, especially Excel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong background in chemistry.

  • Experience with environmental modeling, permit compliance, and regulatory agency engagement.

  • Semiconductor, technology and/or manufacturing environmental experience.

Special Requirements

  • Must work on site 5 days a week during standard first shift hours (Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM-4:30 PM or similar).

  • Flexible work schedule for occasional training and project support.

  • Able to lift, push, pull 40 lbs; carry 40 lbs; sit 40%; stand 20%; walk 40%; must be able to perform activities that include stooping, reaching, handling, thinking, hearing, talking, seeing, work alone, work around others.
