About Carter:
Carter is rethinking adtech infrastructure from the ground up with a privacy-first, AI-powered platform transforming commerce media. Our platform enables sophisticated audience management, seamless campaign execution, and advanced monetization-while keeping data security and privacy at the core. We empower our partners to turn every customer interaction into a revenue-generating opportunity, leveraging AI, first-party data, and seamless integrations across the entire retail media ecosystem.

Position Overview:
We are seeking an accomplished Principal Data Scientist to play a pivotal role in architecting, deploying, and scaling next-generation machine learning systems that fuel Carter’s platform. In this role, you’ll help solve some of the most challenging problems in adtech, including real-time bidding, cross-channel budget allocation, incremental lift measurement, attribution modeling, and customer lifetime value optimization.

As a senior technical leader, you will not only design high-impact solutions but also mentor a team of data scientists and engineers, guide technical decision-making, and collaborate closely with product and engineering to influence Carter’s long-term roadmap. This role offers the opportunity to shape the technical foundation of a fast-growing, high-frequency, high-volume platform at the cutting edge of AI and privacy-preserving advertising.

Job Responsibilities

  • Machine Learning Innovation: Design, develop, and deploy scalable ML models for real-time bidding, campaign pacing, budget allocation, and cross-channel optimization in high-throughput, low-latency environments.
  • Causal Inference & Measurement: Develop robust frameworks for incrementality measurement, attribution modeling, and customer lifetime value (CLV) leveraging advanced statistical methods, causal inference, and privacy-preserving ML techniques.
  • Leadership & Mentorship: Serve as a technical mentor and thought leader, guiding data scientists and data engineers to deliver high-quality, production-ready solutions and fostering a culture of technical excellence and experimentation.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with product managers, engineers, and business stakeholders to translate advertiser goals and KPIs into actionable data science solutions that directly drive business impact.
  • Scalable Systems Engineering: Work with engineering teams to ensure models are robustly monitored, validated, and optimized for performance, resilience, and fairness in live production systems.
  • Research & Roadmap Influence: Stay ahead of emerging trends in adtech, reinforcement learning, causal modeling, and privacy-first AI, and play a central role in shaping Carter’s data science and AI strategy.

Basic Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience deploying machine learning models at scale in high-frequency, high-volume environments, ideally within the adtech ecosystem.
  • Deep expertise in classification models, reinforcement learning, real-time prediction, distributed training systems, and causal inference techniques.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, Scala, and SQL; experience with ML frameworks and libraries such as XGBoost, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
  • Familiarity with adtech protocols (RTB, attribution, identity resolution) and experience with privacy-preserving machine learning (federated learning, differential privacy, secure multi-party computation).
  • Proven track record of leading and mentoring data science teams, fostering innovation, and delivering solutions that balance technical complexity with business needs.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills with the ability to influence stakeholders across technical and non-technical teams.

We are proud to offer a competitive salary alongside a strong healthcare insurance and benefits package. The role is hybrid, with 3 days per week spent in our Toronto office. We pride ourselves on the growth of our employees, offering extensive learning and development resources.

ShyftLabs is an equal-opportunity employer committed to creating a safe, diverse and inclusive environment. We encourage qualified applicants of all backgrounds including ethnicity, religion, disability status, gender identity, sexual orientation, family status, age, nationality, and education levels to apply. What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
