Root was founded on the belief that car insurance is broken, and we set out to change it. We’re harnessing the power of technology to revolutionize this archaic, complicated industry. Using machine learning and mobile telematic platforms, we’ve built one of the most innovative insurtech companies in the world.

The Opportunity

We believe that a disruptive insurance company must have a principled quantitative framework at its foundation. At Root, we are committed to the rigorous development and effective deployment of modern analytical methods to solve problems in the insurance industry.

Root’s 11-week Analytics Internship offers the chance to work on meaningful business analytics challenges in claims and customer service. Interns will collaborate with experienced analysts, data scientists, and cross-functional teams, applying quantitative methods to deliver real-world solutions. We’re looking for candidates with strong quantitative skills, programming abilities, problem solving skills, and business acumen.

Root is a “work where it works best” company. This means we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US.

Salary Range: $32/hour

Internship dates: June 2026 – August 2026

Please Note: We are unable to do OPT and CPT work authorizations

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Designing, running, and monitoring statistical experiments, such as A/B tests, to solve real-world data problems in the insurance industry.
  • Developing internal tools for other analysts and data scientists to promote efficient and rigorous data-driven decision making.
  • Researching business problems and conducting cost-benefit analysis to shape the prioritization of future investments.
  • Communicating insights through intuitive data-storytelling, automated reporting, and dashboard development for non-technical audiences.

What You Will Need to Succeed

  • Currently pursuing a Master’s in a quantitative field, such as Analytics, Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Actuarial Science, or similar. Graduation date between late 2026 and late 2027, preferred.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of statistical methods, study design, and A/B testing
  • Experience with SQL (required), and R or Python (preferred)
  • Experience with Business Intelligence software such as PowerBI, Tableau, Looker, etc.
  • Strong communicator and storyteller with strong data visualization skills
  • End-to-end ownership mentality with a high level of attention to detail

The interview process includes an initial 30 minute phone interview with a recruiter, 30min interview discussing coursework and background with Analytics manager or Lead Analyst. Then a 1 hour case study interview live with the candidate by a panel of 2 interviewers. The case study will be crafted in a way that someone with no insurance experience could complete.

As part of Root's interview process, we kindly ask that all candidates be on camera for virtual interviews. This helps us create a more personal and engaging experience for both you and our interviewers. Being on camera is a standard requirement for our process and part of how we assess fit and communication style, so we do require it to move forward with any applicant's candidacy. If you have any concerns, feel free to let us know once you are contacted. We’re happy to talk it through.

Please see our Privacy Notice available HERE for more information on how we process your personal data.

Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
