Job Description:

Position Summary:

DTN is seeking a talented Platform Engineer to help build and evolve the foundational cloud-native capabilities of our Operational Decisioning Platform (ODP).

The DTN Operational Decisioning Platform is an internal platform that packages cloud infrastructure into purpose-built, higher-level capabilities so that our engineers, solutions teams, and customers can build data products, applications, and AI-powered tools without managing the underlying cloud infrastructure themselves.

As a Platform Engineer, you will build and deliver features across the platform's developer-facing APIs, software development kits (SDKs), command-line interfaces (CLIs), module framework, and managed services. You will work autonomously on well-scoped engineering initiatives while collaborating with senior engineers who provide technical guidance, design reviews, and mentorship.

This is an opportunity for an engineer with several years of professional experience to deepen their expertise in AWS cloud-native technologies, distributed systems, and platform engineering. You will help build infrastructure that other engineers depend on while developing the technical judgment and ownership skills needed to advance toward a senior engineering role.

What You Will Be Responsible For:

Platform Feature Development and Delivery

  • Design, build, test, and deploy platform features from initial planning through production delivery.
  • Implement service logic, module functionality, and business logic supporting the DTN Operational Decisioning Platform.
  • Develop and extend developer-facing APIs, SDKs, CLIs, and managed platform capabilities.
  • Write and maintain infrastructure-as-code configurations required to provision and deploy platform services.
  • Independently own moderately complex engineering features from development through deployment, with minimal oversight.
  • Solve day-to-day technical challenges independently while escalating architectural and design questions to senior engineers when appropriate.

Module Framework and Distributed Systems

  • Contribute to the development and evolution of the platform's module framework.
  • Implement interface contracts and business logic within a framework that manages common platform requirements.
  • Work with framework capabilities supporting authentication, authenticated communication, dispatch, validation, metrics, retries, and reconciliation.
  • Develop reliable software components that integrate effectively with the platform's shared services and architectural standards.
  • Apply distributed-systems principles, including asynchronous processing, retry handling, idempotency, and reliable service interactions.
  • Contribute to modular, reusable platform capabilities that enable other engineering teams to build applications and data products without directly managing underlying cloud infrastructure.

Software Quality and Engineering Practices

  • Develop reliable, maintainable, and thoroughly tested production software.
  • Create and maintain automated unit and integration tests to validate application functionality and system behavior.
  • Use established build tooling, continuous integration processes, and automated testing practices.
  • Follow trunk-based development practices to keep code changes deployable and support incremental delivery.
  • Apply established platform standards for security, interface design, infrastructure as code, and software development.
  • Participate in technical design discussions and code reviews, incorporating feedback to continuously improve engineering quality.
  • Use version control and source-management practices to support effective collaboration and reliable software delivery.

Cloud Infrastructure and Operational Support

  • Develop and maintain cloud-native services using AWS infrastructure and platform capabilities.
  • Work with cloud compute, storage, identity and access management, API services, managed data stores, and event-driven technologies.
  • Use Terraform or comparable infrastructure-as-code tools to define and manage cloud infrastructure.
  • Instrument services with appropriate metrics, monitoring, and observability capabilities to support troubleshooting and operational reliability.
  • Participate in the team's supported on-call rotation and assist with investigating service failures and operational incidents.
  • Develop experience troubleshooting distributed-system failures, cross-account interactions, and cloud infrastructure issues.
  • Apply least-privilege access principles and established cloud security practices.
  • Help maintain reliable, observable, and debuggable services across the platform.

AI-Assisted Engineering and Platform Capabilities

  • Use modern AI-assisted software development tools, including coding assistants and agentic development technologies, to support daily engineering activities.
  • Apply AI development tools responsibly to improve coding efficiency, engineering productivity, and software quality.
  • Contribute to AI-augmented platform capabilities, including features supported by large language models (LLMs), AI agents, and related technologies.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers to understand the design and implementation of AI-enabled services within the platform's modular architecture.

Collaboration and Professional Development

  • Collaborate with senior engineers, engineering leadership, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver high-quality platform capabilities.
  • Seek and incorporate feedback from technical design reviews, code reviews, and mentoring opportunities.
  • Continuously develop expertise in AWS cloud architecture, distributed systems, infrastructure automation, and platform engineering.
  • Demonstrate increasing independence, technical judgment, and ownership as engineering responsibilities grow.

What You Will Bring to the Position:

Professional Experience and Education

  • 2–5 years of professional software engineering experience developing and shipping production software.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently deliver moderately complex software features from development through deployment.
  • Ability to solve routine engineering challenges with minimal oversight while recognizing when additional technical guidance is appropriate.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, technical curiosity, and a commitment to continuous professional growth.

Programming and Application Development

  • Solid programming skills in TypeScript and Node.js, or strong proficiency in another modern programming language with a demonstrated ability to quickly learn TypeScript/Node.js.
  • Academic or professional software development exposure to front-end technologies such as React, Angular, or Vue.
  • Academic or professional software development exposure to back-end technologies such as Node.js or Python.
  • Experience developing APIs using RESTful services built with Node.js.
  • Experience consuming both REST and GraphQL APIs.
  • Understanding of REST API design, JSON, and service-based application development.
  • Solid understanding of source control and versioning using Git.

Cloud Infrastructure and Distributed Systems

  • Working knowledge of AWS and fundamental cloud computing concepts, including compute, storage, identity and access management, and APIs.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code technologies such as Terraform or comparable tools.
  • Understanding of fundamental distributed-systems concepts, including asynchronous processing, retries, and idempotency, or demonstrated ability to learn these concepts quickly.
  • Familiarity with standard engineering practices, including version control, code reviews, continuous integration, and automated testing.
  • Academic or professional experience with SQL and database technologies such as PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, or equivalent database platforms.
  • Interest in expanding technical expertise in cloud-native infrastructure, distributed systems, and shared platform capabilities.

AI Development and Engineering Growth

  • Familiarity with modern AI development toolkits, including AI-assisted coding tools and agentic development technologies.
  • Interest in contributing to AI-augmented platform capabilities involving LLMs, AI agents, and related services with guidance from senior engineers.
  • A growth mindset demonstrated through receptiveness to feedback, continuous learning, and a commitment to improving the quality of engineering work.

What Will Make You Stand Out:
  • Exposure to serverless and event-driven cloud services.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code modules, schema-based validation, observability tooling, containerized services, or continuous integration pipelines.
  • Interest or experience in platform engineering, developer tooling, or infrastructure development, particularly building systems and capabilities that other engineers use.
  • Exposure to cloud security concepts, including identity and access management, TLS/mTLS, service authentication, and signing.
  • Familiarity with modern AWS cloud-native architectures involving serverless compute, API layers, managed data stores, and event-driven services.
  • Experience developing reusable software components, shared service interfaces, or developer-facing platform capabilities.
  • Familiarity with tested and validated interfaces, trunk-based development, infrastructure as code, and least-privilege access practices.
