Job Description

General Summary: 

Vertex is seeking a highly motivated and passionate Senior Research Scientist to join the In Vivo Integrated Pharmacology team. This role will lead the design, execution, and interpretation of complex in vivo and in vitro immunological and pharmacological studies to evaluate how compound modulate disease biology. This individual is expected to bring scientific creativity, technical versatility, and a high level of productivity while balancing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment. The ideal candidate is adaptable, collaborative and contributes to the development of pharmacological strategies that advance programs from late discovery through IND-enabling stages. This calls for a deep expertise in immunology and pharmacology, along with a broad understanding of related scientific disciplines and literature. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Design and execute elaborate, technically challenging, and conceptually connected multi-component immunological and pharmacological experiments. 

  • Transform complex, multidimensional experimental data into clear hypotheses and actionable experimental directions to guide project decisions and new research activities. 

  • Prioritize and balance studies across multiple projects, ensuring alignment with project and corporate objectives, and timelines. 

  • Perform advanced experimental troubleshooting, develop novel methodologies, and validate innovative experimental approaches to address critical project goals. 

  • Drive methodological innovation by incorporating emerging technologies and integrating principles from other adjacent scientific disciplines to address research methodologies to address significant scientific questions maintain a competitive advantage. 

  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of relevant scientific literature, both within immunology and pharmacology and across related fields, to integrate new insights into research activities. 

  • Research external intellectual property relevant to projects and areas of pursuit, contributing to the strategic direction of the research. 

  • Prepare and deliver high-quality study presentations, effectively communicating experimental conclusions at internal and external meetings. 

  • Contribute substantively to patent and/or publication preparation, ensuring the dissemination of impactful scientific findings. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Demonstrated expertise in designing, executing, and interpreting complex immunological and pharmacological in vivo and in vitro experiments to measure the action of compounds in disease-relevant contexts. 

  • Proven ability to develop and optimize sophisticated in vivo models of inflammation and autoimmune diseases, ensuring robust and reproducible results to advance therapeutic discovery. 

  • Advanced skills in immunological techniques, including flow cytometry, immunophenotyping, and in vitro/ex vivo cellular assays, to characterize immune responses and compound efficacy. 

  • Proficiency in a wide range of in vivo techniques, including routes of administration, blood/tissue harvesting, and processing for cellular/molecular analyses of immune responses and target engagement in immune models. 

  • Broad and deep knowledge of immunology and pharmacology principles, with the ability to apply this knowledge to complex experimental designs. 

  • Demonstrates a high level of productivity, experimental creativity, and the ability to disseminate ideas effectively across disciplines. 

  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to address complex challenges and achieve critical project goals. 

  • Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to present technical information effectively to diverse audiences. 

Education and Experience: 

  • Ph.D. in Immunology, Pharmacology, or a related discipline with 2+ years of relevant post-doctoral employment experience, or 

  • Master’s degree with 5+ years of relevant employment experience, or 

  • Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of relevant employment experience.

Pay Range:

$110,900 - $166,300

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
