Job Summary

Conduct all duties under the direction and supervision of the Legal & Compliance Department attorneys and officers to comply with federal and state laws.  Assist Division attorneys in the delivery of legal services to the Company by complying with legal process in accordance with the law and corporate standard; conducting legal research; drafting legal documents; analyzing issues conducting privilege and third-party information reviews, evaluating contractual exposure of lawsuits; locating, organizing and preparing discovery materials; responding to subpoenas and assisting attorneys in the management of transactions.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge & Skills:  Working knowledge of simple pleading rules; State and federal civil procedure acts, local court rules, and support enforcement, wage withholding and garnishment laws and regulations; legal and medical terminology; Group Division operations and products.  Ability to analyze facts and identify relevant legal issues regarding legal process; communicate clearly and concisely in written and oral communication; exercise judgment in completing tasks;  ability to analyze documents and files in support of litigation management and other special projects; properly interpret and apply state and federal statutes, regulations and case law governing legal process.

  • Job Complexity & Judgment:  Works on wide range of low to moderately complex assignments.  Often defines procedures on how to complete project work when assigned in the form of objectives.  Exercises independent judgment and discretion.

  • Independence & Supervision required:  Typically receives little instruction on daily work.  May require general instructions on new assignments.  Collects relevant and valid information for appropriate analysis of a problem, situation, or issue of low to moderate legal complexity.  Able to identify basic legal implications/conclusions from the analysis.

  • Interaction & Influence:  Communicates and interacts with persons at all levels in the organization, industry and community.  Continues to build trust with and contribute to the legal team.  Expands sphere of influence to include relevant internal and external partners.  Grows working relationships within the team, department, and business units.

Skills and Background You’ll Need

  • Experience:  2+ years progressively responsible work experience in a law office, corporate law department or the equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.

  • Education:   Associate’s degree in Paralegal Studies or Paralegal Certificate required.

    • Basic understanding of corporate law, business structures, and insurance.

    • Knowledge of contract law as it relates to insurance policies.

  • Contract Review and Drafting:

    • Ability to review, draft, and maintain insurance contracts, policy updates, and amendments.

    • Understanding the terms, exclusions, and conditions in insurance agreements.

  • Regulatory Compliance:

    • Knowledge of the regulations set by insurance regulatory bodies, like state insurance departments and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

    • Understanding how insurance laws and regulations impact company operations and risk management.

  • Risk Management:

    • Basic knowledge of risk management principles and how insurance coverage helps businesses manage risks.

  • Legal Research and Analysis:

    • Ability to research insurance law, regulations, and case law.

    • Skilled in analyzing insurance documents to identify key legal issues.

  • Attention to Detail: 

    • Strong ability to review legal and insurance documents carefully to ensure accuracy and compliance.

  • Document Management and Organization: 

    • Expertise in organizing legal documents, insurance claims, and records.

    • Ability to manage deadlines and ensure timely submission of reports and filings.

  • Communication: 

    • Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact with attorneys, clients, insurers, brokers, and regulators.

    • Ability to draft clear legal documents and summaries.

  • Technology Proficiency:

    • Familiarity with legal and insurance software (e.g., case management systems, claims software).

    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for drafting documents and creating reports.

  • Time Management:

    • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Confidentiality and Ethics:

    • Understanding the importance of maintaining confidentiality, especially with sensitive insurance claims and legal matters.

    • Knowledge of the ethical standards governing legal professionals and the insurance industry.

  • Problem-Solving:

    • Ability to help attorneys resolve complex issues related to insurance claims, contracts, and regulations.

  • Eligibility to participate in an incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program and plan. Any award depends on a variety of factors including individual and organizational performance.

Salary Range:

24.76 - 36.30
