Job Description

Teledyne FLIR is looking for an early career Optical Engineer (OE) to join the Optical Systems Group (OSG), a division of FLIR’s commercial business area that specializes in the design of advanced infrared zoom lenses and integrated multispectral imaging systems.

The OE role at OSG is a unique opportunity to join our successful team of experienced lens designers, mechanical engineers, and specialized manufacturing engineers as we prepare for continued future growth. You will make meaningful contributions to an expanding portfolio of imaging lenses and integrated camera systems, from initial concept through production. Activities will include the generation of first order optical layouts, tolerance and narcissus analysis, hands-on product validation testing, and support for the transition to volume manufacturing. If you are looking to apply your passion for optics, increase your professional skills, and join a small, growing team to develop next generation solutions, then we encourage you to apply!

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Support senior optical engineers in the design and development of optical prescriptions
  • Perform comprehensive thermal and tolerance analysis
  • Work with opto-mechanical engineers to ensure lens designs are robust, manufacturable, and represent an appropriate balance of trades
  • Support manufacturing engineers in the design, assembly and validation of test stations, fixtures, and custom tooling to ensure consistency with design intent
  • Participate in the formal design review process, including preparation and presentation of design documentation
  • Support production and quality assurance through laboratory testing and results analysis

Job Qualifications:

  • BS in Optics or related technical field
  • 0-5 years related work experience
  • Experience with Zemax (or Code V) preferred
  • Experience with lens design principles, thermal imaging technology, interferometry, and radiometry a plus
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to support multiple projects and competing priorities
  • Applicants must be either a U.S. citizen or Perm Resident
