The role involves mastering flight control of weather balloons, making quick judgment calls under pressure, and effectively collaborating with engineering teams.
The summary above was generated by AI

WindBorne Systems is supercharging weather forecasts with a unique proprietary data source: a global constellation of next-generation smart weather balloons targeting the most critical atmospheric data. We design, manufacture, and operate our own balloons, using the data they collect to generate otherwise unattainable weather intelligence.

Our mission is to eliminate weather uncertainty and, in the process, help humanity adapt to climate change, be that predicting hurricanes or speeding the adoption of renewables. We are building a future in which the planet is instrumented by thousands of our microballoons, eliminating gaps in our understanding of the planet and giving people and businesses the information they need to make critical decisions. The founding team of Stanford engineers was named Forbes 2019 30 under 30 and is backed by top-tier investors, including Khosla Ventures and Footwork VC.

WindBorne achieves full atmospheric coverage by launching balloons spread across time and space, but sometimes we need to navigate them to specific locations—like into the eye of a hurricane. That’s where our Flight Control team role comes in.

Balloons navigate by changing their altitude: drop ballast to ascend, or vent gas to descend. Different altitudes have different wind speeds and directions, so if you understand the wind field, you can route a balloon anywhere in the world. In practice, flight control means relying on a mix of meteorology, physics, and operational judgment to get balloons wherever they need to go.

Responsibilities

You'll become an expert at flying our balloons. We're not looking for someone to follow a script; We want you to get better at this than we currently are. Balloons fail often – sometimes from. hardware issues, sometimes from weather, sometimes from our own mistakes. We launch a lot of them, and we're constantly learning. In this role, you'll develop specialized knowledge that lets you make good calls quickly – when to avoid vs head through rough weather, how to correct for forecast uncertainties, and how to reach locations that push the bounds of what our hardware is capable of.

Skills and Qualifications

What we're looking for:

  • Ability to learn independently in an environment where best practices are constantly evolving

  • Comfort prioritizing and making judgment calls in high-pressure, uncertain environments

  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering teams

  • Willingness to work unusual hours to get the balloons where they need to go

Due to the nature of our work supporting U.S. defense operations, this position requires U.S. citizenship. A security clearance is not required.

There’s no one set background that makes someone great at this. Above all, we’re looking for people who will genuinely love the day-to-day of learning to master flight control. If you think that’s you, we want to hear from you!

Hours

This is a part-time, fully remote position at approximately 20 hours per week, with an hourly rate of $22-$25 USD/hr. Hours are regularly scheduled rather than on-call — we'll work with you to find a consistent schedule that fits both your availability and our coverage needs. Weekend availability is strongly preferred. Reliable internet is required.

This role is a good fit for U.S. citizens living abroad or anyone looking for steady part-time work with non-traditional hours. Please include your general availability (days/times and timezone) When you apply.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
