Job Description:
Job Purpose:
Under the broad direction of the Network Services Manager , the Network Engineer I is responsible for designing, installing, testing, supporting, and maintaining all hardware and software required for the operation of the college’s network and cabling plant. This position will also be responsible for troubleshooting tier 1-2 networking trouble tickets across the College.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides hands-on layer 2 network design, troubleshooting, maintenance, and installation of network hardware, software, and services on an ongoing basis.
Utilizes the College ticketing system to respond to service requests
Performs the setup, installation and configuration of equipment in the college’s complex network environment.
Interacts with vendors and at times manages vendor service levels.
Responds to customer network issues and requests in a timely, service oriented, and efficient manner, and escalates tickets appropriately as needed.
Provides guidance and recommendations on optimal configurations
Assists with the monitoring of network traffic such as networked port use, network bandwidth utilization, and wireless network usage.
Provides detailed documentation related to equipment installed in the college network
Performs wireless network surveys to assist with troubleshooting and expansion of the wireless network
Assists the Infrastructure team with cabling and rack and stack where necessary
Perform physical inventory validation as requested
Participate in the support of college sponsored applications in a collaborative effort with other IT service organizations.
Attends college committee/work group meetings and advises committee members on how projects can be implemented on the campus network.
Assists the Network Services Manager and Director with various other projects as assigned.
Maintain a constructive, team-oriented and customer-focused attitude at all times and in all settings.
Maintains operating procedures and associated documentation.
Follow Network and Telecommunications/IT Operations Guidelines.
Possible Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Be prepared for a flexible work schedule based on the college academic calendar, which could occasionally require staff resources be available in non-business hours or weekend, to participate in events, projects, maintenance, or critical repair situations.
May need to lift up to 15 pounds, as well as travel up to 2 flights of stairs
Knowledge and Skills Required:
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent professional experience and 3-5 years of experience in the networking field.
Strong working knowledge of wireless networking technologies and principles.
Basic working knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, OSPF, EIGRP, IP Routing, BGP, VLANs, VOIP, QoS, Trunking, VPN, Spanning Tree, Access Control List, HSRP, firewalls, Wireless LANS, as well as the networking aspects and operating systems of both Macintosh, Linux, and Windows environments. Knowledge of SDA and security groups.
Basic working knowledge and experience with Cisco products and services a plus.
Cisco certification a plus.
Experience working within business critical networks (prefer 500+ computer users) installing, supporting, and administering network services and Internet connectivity through various media (i.e. wire, fiber and wireless).
Experience using an NMS to troubleshoot network issues
Experience utilizing a ticketing system to manage work. Jira experience a plus
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to explain the functioning and operation of the campus network to users and vendors.
Strong analytical skills in order to assist users in recognizing and troubleshooting network problems.
Strong organization skills in order to assimilate and disseminate new information.
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Ability to stay abreast of current developments in networking hardware and software through active research and occasional class or seminar attendance.
Hiring Range:
$80,000 - $95,000; salary dependent on relevant experience and education.
