Narrative Strategy Director (Remote) About Empower Project

Empower Project is building the future of organizing. We recruit and train tens of thousands of everyday people to act as trusted messengers in their own communities—combining relational organizing with organic social media to reach voters in the places traditional campaigns can’t.

In an era of declining trust, we believe the most powerful messages don’t come from institutions; they come from people.

Empower Project organizes to improve people’s lives using the power of relational organizing. We provide the software and expertise to help communities, progressive organizations, and nonprofits leverage their personal relationships to build power and dramatically expand the electorate. Our cutting-edge technology, Empower, stands at the forefront of the industry and is trusted by thousands of organizations nationwide.

Job Description

Empower Project is seeking a Narrative Strategy Director to define and amplify our role within the broader progressive movement.

This is a senior, strategic role focused on positioning, storytelling, and thought leadership—not traditional communications. You will shape how Empower is understood by partners, funders, and the ecosystem at large, and ensure our work is clearly connected to the future of political organizing. You will translate complex programmatic work into a compelling, repeatable narrative that travels.

This is a full-time, fully remote position. You will collaborate with colleagues across multiple time zones and should be prepared to work from home or a location of your choosing. Core hours are Monday through Friday, with occasional nights and weekends during peak season, and some travel to conferences and team retreats throughout the year.

Job Responsibilities

Strategy & Brand

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a unified narrative strategy across all organizational entities and channels.
  • Ensure consistent application of brand standards across all materials; create and update documentation, SOPs, and guidelines for staff and consultants.
  • Supervise the graphics design consultant and web development consultants to ensure all materials and websites meet brand standards.

Earned Media & Thought Leadership

  • Develop and execute an earned media strategy with the goal of raising Empower's profile within the broader political community.
  • Book Empower Project leadership on relevant movement podcasts; develop and manage pitch materials and interview preparation.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to feature Empower App as a core topic at prominent national training organizations and conferences.
  • Prepare staff for media interviews and public-facing appearances.

Events & Conferences

  • Manage conference sponsorships, marketing materials, and attendee logistics for all conferences; work cross-functionally with the sponsorship and Partner Success teams.
  • Develop and execute Empower Open House partner training events, including invitations, registration, run-of-show, and post-event follow-up.
  • Coordinate speaking submissions, sponsorship SOPs, and event materials (e.g., swag, signage, branded collateral) for conferences

Content & Collateral

  • Draft and maintain key organizational documents, including monthly talking points, partner briefings, state-specific travel packs, one-pagers, and case studies for the Partner Success team.
  • Develop and send monthly written updates to coalition partners and movement tables

Website Management

  • Supervise and coordinate website projects across Empower Project's entities, working with external development consultants and ensuring timely delivery.
  • Conduct QA reviews on site updates, refresh content to reflect current programs and staff, and maintain functionality across all properties.

Organizational & Leadership Responsibilities

  • As a member of the leadership team, contribute to organization-wide strategy, culture, and DEI goals.
  • Provide internal communications support for key announcements, policy rollouts, and program updates.
  • Support crisis communications as needed.
  • Participate in regular Partner Success and fundraising team meetings to surface compelling stories for press, funders, and allies.
  • Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications

Required

  • Demonstrated experience creating messaging and content for mission-driven or advocacy organizations.
  • Exceptional writing skills across formats: email, press releases, memos, talking points, one-pagers, and partner communications.
  • Hands-on experience with email marketing platforms, particularly Zoho Marketing or similar automation tools (e.g., Mailchimp, HubSpot, Salesforce Marketing Cloud).
  • Experience managing websites, including coordinating with developers and consultants across multiple properties.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to track and execute multiple workstreams simultaneously.
  • 2+ cycles of political communications experience.
  • Experience building relationships with nonprofits, community organizations, progressive movement groups, political candidates, and organized labor.
  • Strong cultural competency and demonstrated ability to collaborate across lines of difference.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment for extended periods.

Preferred

  • Experience with and commitment to people-centered, ethical storytelling.
  • Familiarity with Zoho CRM and Zoho Marketing Automation.
  • Existing relationships with national or state progressive partners or movement tables.
  • Experience managing or coordinating web development projects across multiple organizational entities.
  • Background in conference and event communications.
  • Fluency in a second language, particularly Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, Hmong, or Navajo.
Compensation Package

$108,000 a year plus benefits. In order to counter pay inequality and uphold internal parity, salaries are non-negotiable for new staff. Benefits include health insurance, dental insurance, and paid time off. Paid time off includes vacation, sick leave, personal days, and federal holidays.

How to Apply

Empower Project is an equal opportunity employer, and does not discriminate based on age, sex, race, ethnicity, religion or sexual preference. Women, persons of color, and individuals from the LGBTQIA+ community are strongly encouraged to apply.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
