AI Engineer Intern | Acorns

Acorns is seeking a Machine Learning Intern to help shape and optimize our AI-powered coding environment. Are you passionate about cutting-edge AI technologies? Are you excited about the future of AI-assisted software development? Do you want to work on cutting-edge machine learning applications that help developers write better code and faster? In this role, you’ll play a key part in refining how developers interact with AI-generated code, improving its usability, and driving adoption within our engineering teams.

Now, we’re taking our mission to the next level of engineering excellence powered by Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). Please note: This position requires candidates to be currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field (hard requirement).

Work sponsorship is not available for this role, including Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT),  F-1 Visa program, and other visa sponsorships.

Acorns is a remote-first organization, offering the flexibility to work remotely while providing optional access to office space in Irvine, CA. This role has the option to be remote within the United States or based in our Irvine, CA office.

This position is part-time and is expected to work 15-20 hours per week.

What you will do at Acorns:

  • Develop and implement RAG models using Amazon Bedrock to enhance programming-related use cases.

  • Explore and integrate vector databases (e.g., Pinecone, Weaviate), embedding models, and retrieval frameworks (e.g., LangChain, FAISS).

  • Research and implement automated code generation tools, such as CoPilot, Cursor AI, etc, to improve developer productivity.

  • Conduct research on techniques to increase developer adoption of generated code.

  • Analyze and evaluate system performance metrics to identify areas for improvement.

  • Collaborate with the team to experiment with and refine Generative AI workflows.

What you will bring to Acorns:

  • Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field (hard requirement)

  • Familiarity with Generative AI concepts, RAG, and frameworks like Amazon Bedrock or similar.

  • Strong programming skills in Python or similar languages.

  • Understanding of system performance evaluation metrics and methodologies.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Hunger to deliver game-changing products

  • Exceptional drive and precision in delivery

  • Optimistic about the potential of societal change

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Generative AI frameworks or libraries (e.g., Hugging Face, OpenAI, LangChain).

  • Knowledge of code generation tools or systems (e.g. Github, Copilot, Cursor AI, Codex, CodeT5, and Tabnine)

  • Research experience or coursework related to AI/ML system evaluation.

  • Passion for improving the developer experience and software engineering processes.

Compensation Information:

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be $30.00/hour.

If hired, employees will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify hourly rates (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
