Position Description

Email marketers are experts in overseeing/creating all email automations, ad hoc promotions, and developing new email funnels for businesses. There are certain skills every great email marketing expert should have:

  • A/B testing skills: A/B testing your subject lines, email copy and CTAs is key to ensuring your campaigns have the best open and click-through rates –– which ultimately lead to a better conversion rate.

  • Copywriting chops: One of the most important skills for a freelance email marketing expert is knowing how to write copy that converts. All the segmentation and automation in the world won’t save you from bad copywriting.

  • Segmentation, automation and tool integration know-how: Understanding how to segment your email lists and deliver relevant drip campaigns based on data (sometimes pulled from other tools or marketing platforms) is critical to creating a well-oiled nurture machine that converts.

  • Customer journey knowledge: Email marketing managers need to have a good understanding of the customer journey and sales funnel. Understanding where prospects or customers are in the funnel and what type of email sequences they need to create to move subscribers further down the funnel or increase retention is a key component of email marketing.

  • Retention skills: Knowing what drip campaigns to build and what content to write to retain subscribers and customers is really important for email marketers. If your campaigns are getting a bunch of unsubscribes every time or your customers aren’t seeing the value in your emails about newly released product features or compelling case studies, it can really hurt your business.

  • Template editing & light coding: Experts know that how an email looks is just as important as what it says. This means these experts have light templating and coding experience for proper email design, specifically in HTML for email templates on most email automation tools and technologies.

  • Campaign ideation: The best email marketers aren’t just great at the technical implementation and segmentation. They can also brainstorm and ideate on what might make the most sense to send to various customers to get them to take action.

  • Email deliverability & list cleaning: Email deliverability is one of the biggest problems for organizations. They often are sending too many emails that are bouncing, not suppressing their lists, or not regularly cleaning those lists. Email marketing experts can diagnose email deliverability health, including spam inboxing, and work to get your brand back on track with 99% email deliverability, ASAP.

  • SMS marketing & integrated campaigning: SMS marketing is on the rise, and many email marketing experts have grown their skillset fast into this new channel.

  • Email marketing tool agnostic: Whether you use Mailchimp, Klaviyo, Hubspot, Salesforce, ActiveCampaign, Constant Contact or whatever other new CRM tool is out on the market, expert email marketers know how to use them all.
