About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a Manufacturing Engineer

The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for the technical ownership of the manufacturing processes. This role will be responsible for developing, implementing, and optimizing our production systems and work centers to ensure efficient, high quality, and cost-effective production. This role collaborates closely with cross-functional teams including design engineering, quality, equipment, R&D, and operations to support product launches, resolve technical issues, and enhance the overall production performance. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in engineering principles, advanced problem-solving skills, and a passion for continuous improvement in an innovative fast-paced new development environment.

What you'll do:

  • Develop and implement innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes, including automation, tooling, and equipment upgrades
  • Evaluate existing manufacturing processes and identify opportunities for improvement in efficiency, productivity, safety, and quality
  • Collaborate with engineering design teams to ensure manufacturability and provide input on design for manufacturing principles
  • Design and implement production fixtures, tooling, and assembly aids to enhance productivity and ensure product quality
  • Train and mentor production personnel on new processes, equipment, and techniques to ensure successful implementation and ongoing compliance
  • Establish and maintain documentation for manufacturing processes, including work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and process specifications
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to manufacturing teams to optimize production workflows, troubleshoot problems, and resolve technical issues in real-time
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions, to address manufacturing issues, such as defects, downtime, scrap, and customer concerns
  • Support new product introductions (NPI) by providing manufacturing engineering expertise throughout the development lifecycle
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in manufacturing to drive continuous improvement initiatives and advance our manufacturing capabilities
  • Lead and support process validation activities, including Layered Process Reviews and internal audits, and ensure compliance with contractual requirements, regulatory requirements, and industry standards

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or other related field
  • 3-8 years of experience in a similar field or industry or an advanced degree with limited experience
  • Experience with lean manufacturing principles, Six Sigma methodologies, and process improvement tools (e.g. DMAIC, Kaizen, 5S, PDCA) to streamline workflows, reduce waste, minimize inventory, and optimize production efficiency
  • Work independently with sound interpretation and judgement
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers and production technicians, coordinate activities, and act as a point of contact for specific areas or projects
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes (including composites, machining, mechanical assembly, electrical assembly, welding, and special processes)
  • Experience and ability to evaluate and implement new manufacturing processes, technologies, and innovative solutions to enhance manufacturing capabilities
  • Hands on experience in process development, optimization, problem solving, and validation
  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software (e.g. Siemens NX, SolidWorks, AutoCAD)
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet challenging deadlines, and drive projects to successful completion within budget and scope

Must-have Requirements:

  • Second Shift hours
  • Must be willing to work overtime as required
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, stooping, and sitting, for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
