The Team

We are seeking a strategic, systems-minded, and experienced professional to join Upstart’s HR Technology team. This individual will lead the design, optimization, and scalable growth of the systems and processes that power our people programs. Sitting at the intersection of technology, operations, and strategy, this role requires someone who brings strong business acumen, deep systems expertise, and a proven track record of building frameworks, tools, and processes that create clarity and enable scale.

As a critical member of our high-impact and collaborative People Platform and Programs Team—whose mission is to make Upstart the best place to do great work—you will operate with autonomy and thought leadership. You will partner closely with HR, Talent Acquisition, IT, and business stakeholders to architect high-impact systems and strategies that elevate our HR technology ecosystem, improve data integrity, and unlock smarter decision-making across the employee lifecycle.

About the Role

In this role, you will lead complex cross-functional initiatives that have a material impact on the business. You will independently identify opportunities for systems improvement, diagnose and correct issues with minimal guidance, and architect scalable solutions across key platforms such as Workday, Greenhouse, and other core People systems.

You’ll influence upstream and downstream stakeholders, develop tools and frameworks to streamline operations, and proactively use data to surface insights, drive prioritization, and shape roadmaps. Your ability to navigate ambiguity, anticipate interdependencies, and lead through influence will be critical to success.


Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote, US

Time Zone Requirements - This team operates on the East/West Coast time zones.

Travel Requirements - This team has regular on-site collaboration sessions. These occur 3 days per quarter at an Upstart office location. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.


How you’ll make an impact:

  • Support the configuration, optimization, and maintenance of recruiting systems, including the ATS (e.g., Greenhouse) and related tools that drive efficiency, compliance, and a strong candidate experience.
  • Partner closely with Talent Acquisition, People Operations, and cross-functional stakeholders to gather business requirements and translate them into effective workflows, system updates, and process improvements.
  • Develop and enhance recruiting-focused automations, dashboards, and self-service tools that reduce manual effort, improve visibility, and empower recruiters, hiring managers, and coordinators.
  • Evaluate tradeoffs in recruiting tools and collaborate with stakeholders to align system solutions with operational goals and hiring strategies.
  • Act as a key partner to the Recruiting and People Ops teams, providing technical guidance and helping shape the recruiting systems roadmap.
  • Drive additional high impact projects and system upgrades, defining project timelines, coordinating testing, and ensuring effective change management for new features and/or processes.

What we’re looking for: 

  • Minimum requirements:
    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Engineering, Information Systems, Business, or related discipline) or equivalent experience.
    • 5+ years of progressive experience managing complex business systems, preferably with a focus on HR technology.
    • Deep experience across the full lifecycle of systems implementation, from discovery and design through testing, deployment, and optimization.
    • Proven success operating independently in fast-paced, high-growth environments with evolving business needs.
    • Expertise in Workday, Greenhouse, or similar platforms, with hands-on experience in systems integration and data integrity practices.
    • Strong problem-solving skills with a track record of building scalable solutions and frameworks.
  • Preferred qualifications:
    • Experience working within or alongside HR functions, with an understanding of employee lifecycle processes and data dependencies.
    • Familiarity with SOX, GDPR, and other compliance frameworks relevant to HR technology and employee data.
    • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional partners and senior leaders.
    • Adept at surfacing insights and developing recommendations from data to drive continuous improvement.
    • Demonstrated leadership in coaching, mentoring, or performance management of junior team members.

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package.  The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k).

$134,900$185,000 USD
