Who We Are

Pattern Data is an AI-powered platform purpose-built for the unique complexities of mass tort litigation, settlement analytics, and claims processing. We automate critical processes like case analysis, documentation, and valuation, leading to faster, more accurate outcomes that dynamically adapt to evolving settlement criteria. Our platform replaces manual inefficiencies with data-driven decision-making, empowering firms to scale operations, reduce costs, and secure stronger results in higher-volume litigations.

At Pattern, our team is built on a foundation of collaborative ownership, visionary problem-solving, customer-centric solutions, and authenticity. We’re looking for a Machine Learning Engineer to join our growing team.

What You’ll Do

At Pattern, powerful, performant models are the backbone of our platform – and as a Machine Learning Engineer, you’ll be the force behind them. You’ll take full ownership of model development and collaborate closely with product managers, engineers and our executive team to bring intelligent, scalable solutions to life.

The models you create will directly impact how leading US law firms build, adjudicate and value their mass tort litigation cases—so we’re looking for someone who thrives in both high-level strategic thinking and hands-on implementation. You’ll help guide technical direction, influence product strategy, and write clean, thoughtful code that drives real-world outcomes. You will:

  • Lead the full data science project lifecycle, from data retrieval and wrangling to model training, validation, deployment, and monitoring
  • Design and apply a range of natural language processing techniques; experience working with medical or legal domain text is particularly valuable
  • Implement and deploy models into highly performant, real-time applications, ideally using containerization (e.g., Docker)
  • Understand practical business implications when developing models, applying domain knowledge to maximize impact and relevance
  • Embrace an iterative approach to software development, delivering value early and often
  • Jump in across the stack when it makes sense, collaborating as a true team player
  • Work in the following:
    • Technologies: Scala, TypeScript, PostgresQL, GraphQL, Elasticsearch, AWS, Python
    • Tooling: PyTorch, SageMaker, HuggingFace Transformers
    • Models: BERT, Sentence Transformers, ViTs, CNNs, multimodal models, commercial LLM experience

What You’ll Bring

  • Master’s degree in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science, or a related field OR 2+ years of equivalent work experience in a comparable full-time data science role
  • 2+ years of experience applying NLP techniques and information retrieval, with a strong understanding of modeling and evaluation methods
  • Proficiency in Scala or Python
  • Experience in the medical domain is a plus
  • The ability to share samples of professional, educational, or personal projects demonstrating your skills

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
