1L Law Clerk
The Opportunity
As a 1L Clerk, you will work alongside exceptional people and be empowered to reach your professional and personal goals. You will have the opportunity to engage with MassMutual?s General Counsel and leadership from each practice area within the Law Department.? You will also have networking and developmental opportunities along with regular performance feedback from assigned attorneys that will contribute to professional development. ?You will also receive support toward obtaining 2L summer associate law firm positions, through resume reviews, mock interviews and recommendations, where appropriate.

During the summer as a 1L Clerk, you will have challenging work across the various practice areas impacting a Fortune 500 company including Dispute Resolution, Corporate Law, Insurance, Broker/Dealer, Corporate Compliance, Tax, Employment, Corporate Governance and Government Relations.? The Impact
Your responsibilities as a 1L Clerk may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Provide support to the legal departments on projects as needed
- Understand the company?s mission and strategy and develop an understanding of how the law department helps the business units to achieve goals
- Conduct legal research and analysis on relevant issues as needed
- Gain practical experience and exposure to a variety of practice areas across the department
It is anticipated, and we are optimistic that this program will take place in-person, on-site at our MassMutual campus in Springfield, Massachusetts. However, there is a possibility that all or part of this program will take place remotely in a virtual format due to COVID-19 or otherwise. If the program will be run in-person and on-site, MassMutual will provide housing as part of the program. We will not provide housing if the program is run remotely in a virtual format.
The Minimum Qualifications
- Enrolled in an ABA accredited law school as a first-year law student for the 2020-2021 academic year
- Undergraduate GPA of 3.3 or greater (on 4.0 scale) or equivalent
- First semester law school GPA of 3.0 or greater (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent
- Demonstrated involvement in law school and community (leadership roles a plus)
- Authorized to work in the U.S. without requiring sponsorship, now or in the future
- Commitment to advancing diversity in the legal profession
The Ideal Qualifications
- Strong critical thinking, discretion and analytical skills
- Ability to perform complex legal research and analysis and advise on results
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated organizational skills with ability to manage multiple competing priorities
