We’re looking for a Lead UX Designer to thoughtfully contribute to our award-winning electronic health record and healthcare revenue cycle product, athenaOne.

In this role, you will help lead the UX portion of our product development process for multi-disciplinary agile R&D teams consisting of product managers, developers, data analytics specialists, and service operations agents — not to mention our customers — to define, design and test workflows that empower dentists and dental staff at FQHCs to effectively manage and perform patient dental care. We’re working to turn a complex and sometimes cumbersome set of processes into a more unified, intuitive, satisfying, and empowering experience for our users. This role is based in Boston, MA.

As a successful candidate, you are a champion for users and embrace the challenge of solving the difficult problems that present the greatest opportunities to ease the burden on healthcare workers. You’ll develop a clear point of view about UX decisions and tradeoffs and collaborate with product and engineering leads to get them implemented. You will function well both independently – making well-informed design decisions on your own – and in collaboration with cross-functional partners in product, engineering, and other disciplines.

You have an eye for design, and the ability to spot small details that others might miss. You love finding ways to drive incremental but significant improvements that keep us moving towards a greater long-term vision that you helped define. You bring curiosity, empathy, and a sense of humor to everything you do. If you are looking for a company that will enable you to work outside of your comfort zone to transform the healthcare ecosystem, athenahealth is the place for you.

Job Responsibilities

  • Produce detailed design concepts and specifications for team projects

  • Identify opportunities for improvement in existing products

  • Make tradeoffs and decisions about project scope, design strategy, and implementation

  • Seek out and incorporate feedback from users and cross-functional teams

  • Promote and demonstrate design best practices for product owners, engineers, and more junior design collaborators

  • Proactively seek out and foster relationships and connections across scrum teams to support cohesion and consistency throughout the user’s experience

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional design experience, preferably including enterprise, financial, or healthcare systems

  • Experience leading product design initiatives, ideally in the enterprise space

  • Experience with in cross-functional, cross-product, and/or cross-geo collaborations

  • Experience solving highly complex problems for users

  • Self-directed and comfortable making decisions without perfect information

  • Interest in developing a deep understanding of the US healthcare space

  • Interest in or experience working with agile/scrum teams

  • Ability to articulate your rationale for design decisions

  • Portfolio demonstrating good understanding of problem framing and design communication, great interaction design skills, and attention to detail
