Role summary:

Drive the architecture and delivery of scalable, secure, and maintainable software that powers the athenaCollector product. This role is based in Boston, MA and is a hybrid position. You will lead engineering efforts across frontend and backend systems, collaborate with product and design partners, and mentor engineers to deliver high-impact Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) solutions. This position reports to the Senior Manager.

Team summary:

In athenaCollector we build technology solutions that automate Revenue Cycle Management (RCM). This Collector team is implementing the underlying medical back-office processes to automate and integrate the unique claims cycle requirements.

The athenaCollector product builds a critical part of the athenaOne platform, which helps our medical provider clients manage their business and revenue cycle (RCM), automating claims and billing for well over $200 billion in client revenue. This team focuses on providing both clients and athena teams with the right features and tools to minimize cash flow delays and operational costs, increase scalability, and help clients maximize the value they get from athenaOne.

As part of this team, you will enable reliable, auditable workflows that touch the billing and claims processes. You will work on both user-facing applications and backend services that process medical data into billable items and create corresponding claims to send them to payers . The team values measurable outcomes, strong user-focused design, observability, and security. You will partner with product managers, UX designers, data engineers, and other engineering teams to deliver solutions that reduce manual work for clients, accelerate collections, and scale across diverse practice types.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop backend services using Java and Spring Boot to meet performance, scalability, and reliability goals.

  • Build and maintain responsive frontend applications using React, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.

  • Design, implement, and maintain GraphQL APIs that serve internal and external consumers.

  • Deploy and operate services on AWS using ECS/EKS and integrate messaging with SQS.

  • Containerize applications with Docker and manage orchestration using Kubernetes.

  • Optimize and query relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL) and improve data access patterns for latency and cost.

  • Lead Agile delivery practices: define sprint goals, prioritize backlog items, and ensure predictable delivery.

  • Integrate AI into engineering workflows: evaluate and adopt practical AI-assisted tools (for example, code generation, automated testing, or observability analytics), define safe usage guidelines for the team, and guide engineers on effective, ethical use of those tools to improve productivity and code quality.

  • Mentor and provide technical leadership to engineers, drive code quality through design reviews and CI/CD best practices.

  • Ensure production systems meet standards for security, observability, testing, and incident response.

Additional Job Responsibilities:

  • Participate in hiring, interviewing, and onboarding of new engineers.

  • Conduct and contribute to cross-team architecture and design reviews.

  • Document architecture decisions, runbooks, and operational runbooks.

  • Support on-call rotations and incident postmortems when needed.

  • Prototype and evaluate new technologies or open-source tools that could benefit the product.

  • Represent the team in cross-functional planning and feature scoping sessions.

  • Contribute to internal engineering standards, tooling, and process improvements.

Expected Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 6+ years of professional software development experience.

  • Hands-on experience with React, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS for building user interfaces.

  • Strong experience developing server-side applications using Java and Spring Boot.

  • Experience designing and implementing GraphQL APIs.

  • Practical experience with AWS services, especially ECS, EKS, and SQS.

  • Experience containerizing applications with Docker and operating them on Kubernetes.

  • Proficiency with relational SQL databases such as Oracle and PostgreSQL.

  • Proven experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.

  • Experience leading or mentoring engineers and delivering production-grade software.

  • Understanding of IaaC/DevOps/Terraform is a plus.

  • Knowledge in Perl is a plus.
