About Democratic National Committee

We’re hiring! Are you fired up to elect Democrats up and down the ticket?

Position Summary: The Democratic National Committee’s Tech Team is hiring a Lead Product Designer to help shape the data infrastructure that drives progressive campaigns nationwide. You’ll play a key role in creating intuitive, powerful tools that empower campaigns, state parties, and partner organizations with the high-quality data and insights they need to win elections.

In this role, you’ll be part of the Product Team and report into our Head of Product. You will also be the people manager for a junior UX Researcher.

Note: This role requires strong UX and UI design skills, including research — applicants focused solely on visual or graphic design will not be a fit.

About the Team: This is high-impact, mission-centered work: ideal for someone who’s energized by progressive tech and wants to build systems that make a difference.

We’re a fully remote team that values clarity over complexity, curiosity over ego, and sustainability over burnout. We believe good ideas can come from anywhere, that accountability and empathy can coexist, and that work should feel meaningful without consuming your whole life. Our team is unafraid to chart a path forward, even in the face of ambiguity.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and analysis: Perform qualitative and quantitative user research to inform design decisions and identify opportunities for product improvement.
  • Conceptualize and ideate: Create user flows, wireframes, storyboards, and site maps to effectively communicate design ideas and intentions.
  • Prototype and test: Develop rough prototypes and conduct usability testing to validate and refine design concepts based on user feedback.
  • Design and iterate: Create high-fidelity visual designs and interfaces that contribute to a seamless user experience.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally: Work closely with product managers, engineers, data analysts, and other stakeholders to define product requirements, understand technical constraints, and ensure a unified product vision. Advocate for and be the expert in UX methodologies and approaches in technical spaces.
  • Advocate for user needs: Use research and data to ensure our products are intuitive, accessible, and grounded in real user experiences.
  • Strengthen our design foundation: Develop and maintain a design system that upholds accessibility, consistency, and clarity across the tools that power progressive campaigns.
  • Manage and mentor a UX Researcher: Help a more junior UX Researcher prioritize work, provide regular feedback and coaching, and guide them in applying UX research best practices.

Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who deeply cares about user-centered design – to understand and design for users’ pains and needs, and to connect those needs back to the Product Team and the work at hand.

Qualifications:

  • We don’t need candidates to check every box on this list. Think of these qualifications as a guide rather than a strict set of requirements. If you’re excited about the role and feel like you can thrive on our team, we want you to apply!

Experience & Background

  • 6–10 years of experience in UX/UI or product design, including experience leading design initiatives and mentoring other designers
  • End-to-end experience designing digital products: contributing to every stage of the process, from research and concept development to interface design, testing, and launch
  • Strong portfolio showcasing impactful, user-centered design work

Design & Product Skills

  • Expertise in UX research methods: user interviews, usability testing, surveys, and journey mapping
  • Strong UI/interaction design skills, including wireframing, prototyping, and high-fidelity design
  • Familiarity with design systems, style guides, and maintaining consistent design standards
  • Experience with digital product lifecycles: discovery, concepting, design, testing, and delivery
  • Ability to translate complex problems into intuitive, accessible solutions

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Lead design discussions and drive decisions with product managers, engineers, and data scientists
  • Manage a junior designer and support their professional growth
  • Advocate for user-centered design across teams
  • Comfortable giving and receiving constructive feedback
  • Experience guiding design strategy for multiple products or initiatives

Tools & Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in design and prototyping tools, such as Figma, Miro, and Dovetail
  • Experience collaborating with engineering teams on implementation
  • Familiarity with analytics or data tools is a plus (e.g., BigQuery, Google Analytics)

You may also have

  • Experience working in civic tech or directly with campaigns, state parties, or political organizations
  • Experience designing and building data-heavy products, collaborating closely with data scientists, analysts, or engineers, and leveraging tools like SQL, BigQuery, or other analytics platforms
  • Experience wearing multiple hats in a small, mission-driven organization, balancing design, research, and strategic responsibilities
  • Experience working effectively with remote or distributed teams, including asynchronous collaboration
  • Familiarity with translating complex datasets into intuitive user experiences for non-technical users

Salary: The starting salary for this position is $135,000 on an annualized basis, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

This is a full-time, exempt position, that may require work on weekends.

This is a position that could require up to 15% travel

Due to federal campaign finance rules, only U.S. citizens or U.S. green card holders are eligible for this role. See 52 U.S.C. 30121; 11 C.F.R. 110.20(i).”

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
