What we’re looking for

The Lead Designer in our Authoring team is focused on delivering exceptional design craft and driving multiple workstreams autonomously. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the user experience of the survey creation and respondent flows in SurveyMonkey platform, ensuring design solutions meet both end-to-end user needs and business objectives.

Our Lead Designer’s mission should be to set the standard on implementation of a survey creation experience that is as rigorous in concept-to-production translation as it is seamless and simplistic – whether it’s serving a novice user or a professional researcher.

What you’ll be working on

  • Lead cross-functional ideation sessions, developing concepts that are strategically different and transformative.
  • Expertly select and adapt methodologies to optimize project outcomes. Uncover opportunities to raise the bar within the team and introduce new frameworks, methodologies, and trends.
  • Identify opportunities that benefit customers, such as cross-workstream collaboration to promote a holistic, end-to-end experience for our users.
  • Advocate for user-centered design principles in product strategy discussions. Set new benchmarks in user-centric design.
  • Form and communicate data-driven rationales that elevate strategic value.
  • Develop and deliver high-quality design solutions that align with user needs, business goals, and technical constraints.
  • Execute hands-on design work, including wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity visuals. Strategically employ varying UI fidelity levels to maximize engagement, accelerate decisions, and drive innovation throughout development.
  • Push the boundaries of creative excellence, while having expert awareness of SurveyMonkey’s design system. Connect the dots and identify opportunities for shared components to be ratified into the system.
  • Ensure designs are scalable, accessible, and optimized for performance. Consider impact on varying form factors.
  • Maintain a pulse on innovations in user experiences, visual design, and the subtle details and triggers (e.g. micro-animations, motion graphics) that shape those ‘moments of delight’.
  • Utilize data-driven insights to validate design decisions through user testing and analytics.
  • Collaborate with user researchers or conduct research yourself to understand the mental models of our users and validate design decisions through moderated and unmoderated research methods.
  • Partner closely with designers to ensure cohesive direction and outcomes in their work.
  • Leverage technical knowledge to bridge the gap between design and engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers, engineers, and researchers, to ensure seamless integration of design into development processes.
  • Build trust and support across the organization through effective communication and collaboration, influencing outcomes and building consensus.
  • Instill trust and build effective working relationships with senior management and key decision-makers.

We’d love to hear from people with

  • 12+ years experience in the design field, most recently working as a Lead Designer or Senior Designer in product design roles.

  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
