MongoDB’s mission is to empower innovators to create, transform, and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data. We enable organizations of all sizes to easily build, scale, and run modern applications by helping them modernize legacy workloads, embrace innovation, and unleash AI. Our industry-leading developer data platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database and is available in more than 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Atlas allows customers to build and run applications anywhere—on premises, or across cloud providers. With offices worldwide and over 175,000 new developers signing up to use MongoDB every month, it’s no wonder that leading organizations, like Samsung and Toyota, trust MongoDB to build next-generation, AI-powered applications.
About the TeamThe Atlas Data Federation and Archiving (ADFA) Storage Systems team is at the heart of MongoDB's data tiering and archiving solutions. It owns the systems that move customer data from database clusters to cloud storage, enabling users to seamlessly tier their data to optimize cost and performance. This team is responsible for the complete Online Archive data pipeline, from the archive agents and worker ingestion systems to a petabyte-scale storage system. The team is embarking on a mission to build a next-generation, single-tenant archival solution for MongoDB's largest and most sophisticated enterprise customers.
About the RoleThis is a critical role that combines people management with deep technical expertise to solve complex distributed systems problems at scale. As the Lead Engineer for the ADFA Storage Systems team, you will:
- Lead a team of 5-8 engineers (currently 6) building the next generation of MongoDB's archival infrastructure
- Be a hands-on technical leader, with significant IC time spanning coding, architecture, and technical reviews
- Mentor and guide your team members, fostering their technical growth and career development
- Collaborate with product management and peers on the archival product roadmap
- Drive incident response and postmortems for production storage systems
We are hiring for this position in our New York, Bay Area, or Seattle offices, with two hybrid working models: in-office (3-5 days/week) or flexible (1-2 days/week).
Note: The position entails participating in a 24/7 support rotation approximately 1 week every 2 months.
Our Management PhilosophyWe believe in high standards with high support. That means:
- Direct feedback delivered with genuine investment in people's growth
- Regular 1:1s that go beyond status updates—career development, skill building, honest assessment
- Willingness to have uncomfortable conversations early rather than letting issues fester
- Making tough calls (performance, scope, priorities) while bringing the team along
If this resonates, we want to talk.
Candidates must have:- Experience leading engineering teams building and operating production systems
- 5+ years software engineering experience, primarily in backend/distributed systems
- Comfort with 24/7 on-call rotation responsibilities
- Hands-on experience with petabyte-scale data infrastructure or storage systems
- Experience building team consensus on architectural decisions across multiple engineering orgs
- Production Go or similar systems language experience
- Familiarity with cloud storage primitives (S3, GCS, Azure Blob)
- Come from adjacent domains (databases, data processing, cloud infrastructure) and want to dive deep into storage
- Have strong fundamentals but haven't worked at this specific scale yet
- Bring diverse technical backgrounds that challenge our assumptions
What matters most: Technical judgment, ability to mentor engineers, and appetite for tackling novel problems in data archiving at scale.
