We are hiring a Lead Backend Engineer to work on a pivotal Federal program that is making a positive impact on millions of Americans' daily lives.
What you'll be doing:
As a Lead Backend Engineer for the My HealtheVet backend team, you’ll serve as the technical backbone of one of the VA’s most mission-critical digital platforms. You’ll architect and drive the development of robust, secure, and scalable backend services that enable Veterans to manage their healthcare—spanning access to medical records, prescriptions, appointments, and secure messaging. You’ll lead backend design decisions, mentor engineers, perform code reviews, and ensure integration with key VA systems such as VistA and Cerner. In partnership with product owners and DevSecOps teams, you’ll champion best practices in API design, system reliability, and cloud infrastructure.
What you’ll bring:
- 6+ years of backend development experience with deep expertise in Java (Spring Boot), Node.js, or .NET Core
- Proven ability to architect and build scalable microservices and RESTful APIs that integrate with large enterprise systems
- Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, Oracle, Redis, and event-driven architectures using Kafka
- Strong knowledge of CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, Jenkins, GitHub Actions), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform
- Experience working in cloud environments, preferably AWS GovCloud or hybrid cloud deployments
- Solid understanding of federal security, privacy, and accessibility standards, including NIST 800-53, HIPAA, and Section 508
- Excellent leadership and collaboration skills, with a track record of mentoring developers, conducting code reviews, and influencing technical direction in Agile/Scrum or SAFe teams
- Bonus: Familiarity with VistA, Cerner, or VA-specific health systems
- Bonus: Experience with OAuth2, SSO, and federal digital identity frameworks
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Compensation:
At Oddball, it’s important each employee is compensated competitively and fairly. In alignment with state legal requirements. A range for the included position is listed below. Be advised, actual offer details are determined by job category, job location, and candidate skill level.
United States Wage Range: $120,000 – $155,000
