IT Business Systems Manager – Discovery & Translational Research

The IT Business Systems Manager will support scientific technology solutions and processes across a fast paced discovery research organization spanning discovery through last stage research phases. This individual must have working understanding of discovery research and scientific data management; demonstrate working knowledge of scientific (chemistry, biology, and genomics) disciplines and scientific research process and analytical methods. This individual will provide the bridge between science and technology to maximize scientific research software tools and capabilities. The Apellis research technology ecosystem includes Scientific Data Management (SDMS and/or EDMS), scientific visualization tools and research informatics/analysis tools.

This position requires some part-time, on-site presence at a discovery lab in Watertown, MA and the main office located in Waltham, MA to work with various Discovery & Research teams.  Flexibility exists for remote/hybrid days based on Research and IT department schedules.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Understand scientific business needs and optimize technology solutions to align with overall business strategies; analyze and evaluate solutions and the scientific business needs. Provide business technology process analysis; documenting, supporting and optimizing processes including scientific data collection and management, search, visualization and analysis.
  • Represent IT as Technical SME across multiple scientific disciplines / technology solutions. 
  • Provide operational support and oversight of software vendors and related service providers to ensure coordination and orchestration of support plans, enhancements, upgrades, integrations, and test activities.
  • Represents IT in collaboration with Quality Validation and Business System Owner determine Computer System Validation (CSV) impact and requirements. 

 Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Practical understanding of research and discovery processes (research studies, discovery experiments, sample management, internal and external data transfer/handling/control, data visualization and analysis, summary reports and presentations, publications).
  • Experience supporting outsourced research studies and working with multiple research vendors or partners for data exchange.  Experience defining and maintaining data transfer and/or data integration mechanisms in a hosted systems architecture; supporting an outsourced development model
  • Must be able to effectively prioritize and plan. Ability to address multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills to develop consensus, clarity, and decision-making

  Experience:

  • Team-oriented and generous in sharing knowledge and enabling others across cross-functional teams
  • Experienced in working with software vendors for support and maintenance
  • Experienced with GxP guidelines, Computer Software Validation (CSV), and IT SDLC methodologies
  • Preferred 10+ years in a pharmaceutical/biotech or related discovery research/scientific environment
  • Minimum of 5+ years direct experience supporting research technology solutions for a bio/gene/pharmaceutical organization
