Job Description Summary:

Investment Managing Directors (MDs) on the Venture Capital team spend the majority of their time sourcing, evaluating, and underwriting venture capital investment managers. This includes meeting with managers, attending annual meetings, networking with industry participants to gather market intelligence, and identifying promising new managers. These efforts culminate in conducting due diligence on high-conviction managers for investment by the firm and its clients. The role serves as a primary point of contact for venture capital managers, coordinating and attending meetings, producing written assessments, and facilitating the flow of manager information internally.
In addition, the Investment Managing Director is responsible for actively monitoring and evaluating managers on an ongoing basis and producing written evaluations for firm and client use. The MD is also expected to work closely with, and support the development of, Investment Analysts and Associates.
Finally, the Investment Managing Director will work collaboratively across the broader Cambridge Associates private investments team to track and analyze industry trends, contribute to research and thought leadership, and serve as a resource for client-facing colleagues constructing high-quality private investment portfolios for clients.

Job Description:

  • Lead the investment assessments of venture capital managers and markets through ongoing qualitative and quantitative research and analysis.
  • Utilize common analytical frameworks and develop analyses to assess venture funds in terms of organization, investment strategy, performance, fund terms, portfolio construction, underlying portfolio companies, and other key attributes.
  • Lead meetings with general partners, management teams, founders, and other relevant professionals to assess and evaluate investment managers and their funds.
  • Lead reference calls regarding investment opportunities and market views with industry participants, including founders, portfolio company executives, co-investors, and other market participants.
  • Produce written assessments and recommendations used by clients and colleagues to support investment decisions. For funds, this includes detailed diligence reports backed by meetings, factual analyses, and references; for the market, this includes periodic research reports on current topics of interest.
  • Monitor market trends, fundraising activity, and investment activity, and contribute to the firm’s thought leadership in venture capital.
  • Serve as a resource to colleagues and clients seeking current information on venture capital opportunities and markets, including data and analysis, comparisons across fund managers, and the investment views of the Private Investments team.
  • Prepare materials for and participate in firm-wide meetings in which the private investments team discusses recent manager meetings and current investment opportunities of interest with client-facing colleagues.
  • Represent the firm at annual manager meetings, industry events, and certain meetings with clients and prospects.
  • Contribute to secondaries and co-investment evaluations, when appropriate.
  • Support the development of junior team members through training, collaboration, and apprenticeship.

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of relevant investment experience, with familiarity with venture capital, growth equity, and broader private investments, preferably gained through work at a large institutional investor, venture capital or growth equity firm, or investment advisory firm
  • MBA, CFA, or other relevant professional qualifications strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of venture capital and its role in a diversified institutional portfolio
  • Demonstrated qualitative and quantitative analytical skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience performing relevant financial analysis for private investments and ideally some experience with limited partnership agreements and fund legal terms
  • Ability and willingness to engage directly with managers, founders, executives, and references
  • Ability to prioritize multiple requests for information while ensuring integrity, accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of work
  • Ability to work independently and under time constraints
  • Demonstrated relationship-building skills
  • Strong project management skills
